What is corporate development (Corp Dev)?

Corporate Development, often referred to as Corp Dev, is a department within a company responsible for strategic growth initiatives such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), partnerships, investments, and divestitures. The Corp Dev team identifies potential targets, conducts due diligence, negotiates deals, and works closely with executive leadership to execute transactions that align with the company's long-term strategy. Their work helps organizations expand, enter new markets, or enhance competitive positioning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a corporate development (Corp Dev) professional?

To thrive in Corporate Development, you need strong financial analysis, strategic thinking, and deal execution skills, typically supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Proficiency with financial modeling tools (such as Excel), valuation software, and familiarity with M&A processes are commonly required, and professional certifications like CFA or MBA can be advantageous. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully sourcing, evaluating, and executing transactions that drive a company’s growth and competitive positioning.

How does the Corp Dev team typically collaborate with other departments during a merger or acquisition process?

They coordinate due diligence efforts, gather insights on potential synergies, and ensure that integration plans align with business objectives. Clear communication and cross-functional meetings are common, helping to identify risks and streamline decision-making. This collaborative approach is key to executing successful deals and ensuring smooth transitions post-acquisition.
