Position Description: Role and Responsibilities
  • The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures including moderate and high complexity laboratory tests.
  • Follows laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing test analysis, reporting and maintain records of patient results.
  • Follows necessary QA/QC requirements for a COLA laboratory.
  • Performs routine Chemistry, Hematology, and Urinalysis testing
  • Prepares peripheral blood smear and performs complete WBC differential on normal and abnormal smears
  • Processes samples for send out and reflex laboratory testing
  • Participates in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results at least once a year
  • Assists with special procedures as needed (i.e. bone marrow aspiration/biopsy procedures).
  • Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests, and prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by maintaining certification requirements.
  • Maintains inter- and intradepartmental workflow by fostering a spirit of cooperation.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects the company by keeping information confidential per HIPAA regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in the Sciences
  • ASCP certification as an MLS
  • Minimum of 1+ years of experience as a Med Laboratory Technician / Laboratory Scientist Documentation Skills, Organization and Attention to Detail
  • Hematology/Core Lab/Phlebotomy experience is preferred
  • Must be comfortable with manual differential testing and performing venipunctures
  • Must be comfortable with Clinical Lab Testing, Chemistry Techniques, and Analyzing Information
  • Must be comfortable with Equipment Maintenance
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel and databases
  • Must be a team player with great communication
