Field Crew Member – Structural Steel

Location: Kings Mountain, NC Region
Employment Type: Full-Time
Department: Field Operations

Position Summary

Midsouth Steel is seeking dependable and experienced Field Crew Members to join our growing structural steel erection operations in the Kings Mountain, NC region. This position is ideal for a construction professional with hands-on steel experience who is comfortable working as part of a crew, reading construction drawings, welding, and traveling throughout the Carolinas and Virginia as project needs require.

Our field crews perform structural steel installation and related work on projects throughout the region. Candidates must be safety-minded, mechanically inclined, dependable, and willing to work as part of a team in a physically demanding construction environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform structural steel erection and installation activities in accordance with project plans, specifications, and Midsouth Steel procedures.
  • Assist with the layout, assembly, fitting, positioning, and installation of structural steel components.
  • Weld structural steel using stick and/or MIG welding processes; TIG and flux-core welding experience is a plus.
  • Read and understand shop drawings, erection drawings, blueprints, and construction prints.
  • Accurately use a tape measure and perform measurements to at least 1/16-inch increments.
  • Safely use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and other construction equipment.
  • Work effectively with other members of the field crew, foremen, project managers, and other trades.
  • Follow all company safety requirements, OSHA regulations, and jobsite procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform other field construction duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Previous construction and structural steel experience required.
  • Welding experience required, with stick and/or MIG welding experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand shop drawings, blueprints, and construction prints.
  • Strong ability to read and accurately use a tape measure, including measurements to 1/16 inch.
  • Ability to safely use common construction tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, climbing, lifting, and working at heights.
  • Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to the designated pickup location.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the region, including South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional welding experience, including TIG and/or flux-core welding.
  • Experience with structural steel erection, fabrication, ironwork, or miscellaneous metals.
  • Experience working from detailed steel erection drawings.
  • Familiarity with rigging, material handling, and construction-site safety practices.
  • OSHA or other construction-related certifications.
Travel Requirements

This position is based in the Kings Mountain, NC region, with the goal of allowing employees who live nearby to report to a designated pickup location each morning. When practical, employees may report to their home or a local rideshare/pickup location, where Midsouth Steel crews will pick them up using company vehicles.

Projects may occasionally require travel throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and surrounding areas.

Overnight travel is expected on an occasional basis, typically in one-week increments. Approximately 95% of weekends will be spent at home.
