What does a copywriter do?

A copywriter is a professional who creates written content for advertising, marketing, and promotional materials. Their main goal is to craft persuasive and engaging copy that encourages people to take action, such as buying a product, subscribing to a service, or learning more about a brand. Copywriters work on a variety of materials, including advertisements, websites, emails, social media posts, and product descriptions. They often collaborate with designers, marketers, and clients to ensure the messaging aligns with brand objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copywriter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copywriter, you need excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that copywriters can produce compelling, targeted content that meets client objectives and drives engagement.

What are some common challenges copywriters face when collaborating with designers and marketing teams?

Copywriters often need to balance creativity with strategic messaging while working closely with designers and marketing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that the written content aligns seamlessly with the visual elements and overall brand voice. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as feedback from multiple stakeholders may require revisions to meet campaign goals. Building strong relationships and maintaining an open feedback loop can help copywriters overcome these challenges and produce cohesive, impactful content.

Job description

Fuse is looking for a Senior Integrated Copywriter who thinks beyond the headline.

We want a modern creative thinker who can uncover the insight, find the big idea, build the story, and bring it to life across channels. Someone who can zoom out to see the strategic opportunity and then zoom all the way in to obsess over the three words that make the campaign click.

This isn’t a traditional copywriter role. You won’t be sitting at the end of the creative process waiting for someone to ask you to “make this sound better.”

You’ll be in it from the beginning.

You’ll help turn briefs into ideas, insights into creative territories, and half formed thoughts into campaigns people actually want to pay attention to. You’ll partner closely with designers, strategists, account teams, and other creatives to make the work smarter, sharper, and more interesting.

And yes, you’ll write. A lot.

What You’ll Do

Find the idea.

Dig into research, briefs, culture, audiences, and business challenges to uncover the insight that gets everyone leaning forward.

Create campaigns, not just copy.

Develop big ideas, creative territories, campaign platforms, and concepts that can stretch across channels, including social, digital, video, experiential, presentations, and whatever comes next.

Make words work hard.

Write messaging, headlines, scripts, manifestos, social copy, campaign language, and everything in between.

Turn thinking into a story.

Build creative briefs, strategic rationale, presentations, and campaign narratives that make people understand not just what the idea is, but why it’s the right idea.

Be a creative partner.

Work side by side with designers throughout the process. Bring ideas to the table, build on theirs, challenge assumptions, and make the work better together.

Bring order to creative chaos.

Organize concepts, messaging systems, presentations, and documentation so great ideas don’t disappear somewhere between Figma, Slack, and “final_FINAL_v7.”

Get people thinking.

Help lead brainstorms and creative working sessions. Ask unexpected questions. Throw out the weird idea. Build on someone else’s weird idea. Know when you’ve found something worth chasing.

Keep the work honest.

Pressure test creative ideas against the brief, audience, brand, and business objective. Great creative should be exciting and work.

Use AI like a creative tool, not a creative crutch.

Use AI to accelerate research, explore directions, generate possibilities, pressure test thinking, and get to stronger work faster while knowing that taste, judgment, originality, and the final idea still come from you.

You Might Be Our Person If…

You’re an ideas person who happens to be a great writer.

You’re strategically minded and naturally curious. You want to know why before jumping to what.

You love brainstorming, especially when the room gets a little messy before the idea gets really good.

You can take a complicated thought and make it beautifully simple.

You’re organized enough to keep multiple ideas, campaigns, decks, and deadlines moving without losing the creative thread.

You understand how brands show up in the modern world and know that “integrated” means a lot more than resizing the same idea for six channels.

You’re comfortable presenting your thinking and can make people believe in an idea.

You like collaborating with designers and believe words and visuals should be developed together, not tossed back and forth over a wall.

You’re curious about AI and already experimenting with how it can make the creative process faster, smarter, and more expansive.

And you have strong opinions about words, but you’re not precious about them.

Bonus Points

Experience working across integrated campaigns, social, digital, video, experiential, or content

Familiarity with Figma

Experience with AI powered creative and writing tools

A portfolio that shows thinking, not just polished copy

An ability to explain the insight behind your favorite work

A healthy curiosity about culture, brands, people, and why certain ideas stick

What We Care About Most

We’re less interested in whether you check every box and more interested in how you think.

Show us work that made someone stop.

Show us an idea you fought for.

Show us the weird route that turned into the right route.

Show us something that makes us say:

“Damn. Wish we thought of that.”

If that sounds like you, we should talk.
