Copywriter Freelancer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copywriter freelancer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copywriter Freelancer, you need excellent writing, editing, and research skills, typically supported by a strong portfolio and sometimes a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs, and proficiency in using collaboration platforms such as Google Workspace are often required. Creativity, adaptability, self-motivation, and effective client communication are essential soft skills for success. These skills and qualities enable freelancers to deliver high-quality content tailored to client needs, meet deadlines, and build long-term client relationships in a competitive market.

What is the difference between Copywriter Freelancer vs Content Writer?

AspectCopywriter FreelancerContent Writer
CredentialsPortfolio, writing samples, possibly marketing or advertising knowledgePortfolio, writing samples, often SEO or niche expertise
Work EnvironmentFreelance, remote, project-basedFreelance or employed, remote or on-site, project or ongoing
Employer/Industry UsageClients across marketing, advertising, brandingMedia, blogs, corporate websites, SEO agencies

While both roles involve writing, a Copywriter Freelancer primarily creates persuasive, marketing-focused content for clients on a freelance basis. Content Writers produce a broader range of informational or SEO content, often for online platforms. The key difference lies in the purpose and style of writing, with copywriters focusing on conversions and branding, and content writers emphasizing informative, engaging content.

What does a copywriter freelancer do?

A copywriter freelancer creates written content for clients, including advertisements, websites, social media, and marketing materials. They research target audiences, craft compelling messages, and often work independently with flexible schedules using tools like word processors and editing software.

How do freelance copywriters typically collaborate with clients and other creative professionals during a project?

Freelance copywriters often work closely with clients, designers, and marketing teams throughout the project lifecycle. Communication usually happens through emails, project management tools, and virtual meetings to clarify goals, review drafts, and incorporate feedback. Copywriters may be responsible for researching the target audience, adapting tone and messaging, and revising content based on client and team input. Effective collaboration skills are essential to ensure the final copy aligns with the brand's vision and campaign objectives. Building strong professional relationships can also lead to repeat work and referrals within the industry.

How do I start freelance copywriting?

To start as a freelance copywriter, build a portfolio of writing samples, identify your target niche or industry, and create profiles on freelance platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. Developing strong writing skills, understanding client needs, and setting competitive rates are essential steps to establish your freelance copywriting career.

Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Copywriter/Editor to write high-volume eCommerce copy, and to serve as a dedicated editor for the Creative team's output across all of Snap's brands, audiences, and financing products, including lease-to-own, loans, and credit cards. This role combines hands-on content creation with company-wide editorial ownership, ensuring every piece of copy that ships is accurate, on-brand, and compliant. This role reports to the Creative Director, and partners closely with Merchandising, Lifecycle Marketing, Product Marketing, Paid Media, and Legal & Compliance.
How you'll make an impact
Copywriting & Content Production
  • Write original copy for eCommerce's 14-15 annual promotional themes across email, paid, social, and on-site placements
  • Draft and refine merchandising copy, product descriptions, and lifecycle messaging that support conversion and revenue goals
  • Use AI tools to accelerate first drafts and generate copy variants for testing, then apply expert judgment to shape them into final, on-brand work

Editorial Ownership
  • Serve as a content editor across the organization, reviewing and refining copy across every brand, audience, and product, including core products, Snap Marketplace, Flex Shopper, and Seen (credit cards, lease-to-own, loans, and other financing products)
  • Establish and maintain editorial standards and a lightweight style guide for eCommerce
  • Catch and correct grammatical, factual, and merchandising errors, reducing rework and last-minute revisions across the team
  • Review and edit AI-generated content to ensure readability, accuracy, and authenticity
  • Provide editorial feedback to internal and freelance writers to raise the consistency of output across the bench

Cross-functional Collaboration
  • Partner cross-functionally to translate campaign and promotional priorities into a scheduled, prioritized copy pipeline
  • Work with Legal & Compliance to ensure customer-facing copy meets regulatory and brand standards, flagging risk before launch Collaborate with designers and the broader
  • Work with the broader Creative team to ensure copy and visual direction land together on tight promotional timelines

AI-Enabled Workflow
  • Build and maintain repeatable AI-assisted drafting and editing workflows, for both eCommerce content production and company-wide editorial review
  • Balance speed gains from AI-generated drafts with the human editorial oversight needed to protect brand voice and compliance across every product line

What you'll need to succeed:
  • 5+ years of experience in copywriting, with meaningful experience editing the work of other writers
  • Experience writing and editing for eCommerce, retail, or promotional/lifecycle marketing
  • Experience in copy development across web, email, social media, and paid channels.
  • Strong editorial instincts: an eye for tone, clarity, grammar, and brand consistency, with the discipline to catch what others miss
  • Comfortable working across a high volume of concurrent campaigns and tight promotional timelines
  • Working knowledge of compliance-driven content; financial services, fintech, or other regulated industry experience preferred
  • Experience using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Jasper) to draft and iterate content, paired with the judgment to know when AI output needs real editorial work

What would make you stand out:
  • Experience building AI-assisted copywriting or editing workflows for a team, not just individual use
  • Background in both copy creation and editorial/QA functions, able to move fluidly between writing and reviewing
  • Experience with writing for both B2C and B2B audiences
  • Experience with SEO content and merchant description optimization
  • Prior experience supporting multiple brands or product lines under one shared content calendar

Why Join Us:
  • Generous paid time off
  • Competitive medical, dental & vision coverage
  • 401K with company match for US
  • Company-paid life insurance
  • Company-paid short-term and long-term disability
  • Access to mental health and wellness resources
  • Company-paid volunteer time to do good in your community
  • Legal coverage and other supplemental options
  • A value-based culture where growth opportunities are endless
