The Role

The Copy Director will oversee and be responsible for Tatler's copy desk and its sub-editing workflow, across all of the magazine's platforms, including its supplements. They will have a natural creative flair for coming up with Tatler's trademark witty headlines, brilliant sells and informative captions. They will possess an intimate understanding of the Tatler world, and be able to transform edited copy into impeccably crafted Tatler reads.

The successful candidate will be in charge of confidently leading the copy desk and will possess superb organisational skills. They will ensure that the entire copy team completes its tasks to the highest standard, within our allocated production deadlines. The Copy Director will also instil a sense of adaptability and flexibility amongst team members, and will play a pivotal role in helping the desk adapt as Tatler's editorial excellence grows and develops.

A calm, collected and methodical approach to dealing with work in a fast-paced environment is a must, as is previous experience as a senior copy editor. Proven team-management skills are essential.

What will you be doing?

  • Oversee Tatler's copy desk to ensure our pieces have witty, sophisticated headlines and sells, and informative captions

  • Understand Tatler's cast of characters, including how and when to use titles, and be able to identify recurring Bystander faces

  • Lead fact-checking and take responsibility for ensuring that the magazine is error-free

  • Ensure that copy is correct in terms of spelling and grammar

  • Own the copy-editing workflow across main magazine, supplements and any other platform as may be needed

  • Be prepared to occasionally edit raw copy

  • Take an active interest in developing the copy team's skills

  • Work closely with other department heads to maintain a smooth workflow

  • Flag possible legal issues

  • Sign off pages on final proof and conduct careful Cromalin reads

  • Liaise with the production department about any revisions to Cromalins and Sherpas

About you

  • Be an excellent copy editor capable of embedding Tatler's tone into all our pieces

  • Possess excellent Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign and InCopy) skills, as well as CMS experience
