What is a copy editor?

As a copy editor, your responsibilities and duties include reviewing written material, called copy, before it is put into print or posted online. You examine the material for grammar and spelling mistakes and structural errors. You also ensure that the tone, tense, and style meet the guidelines set out by the publisher. If you work in journalism for the copy desk of a news organization, you not only proofread but also fact check and make sure there is no slanderous content. You also check headlines to ensure they are attention grabbing and grammatically correct.

What does a copy editor do?

A copy editor is responsible for reviewing and correcting written material to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency. They check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style errors, and may also verify facts and improve the flow of the text. Copy editors work with writers and other editors to polish content before publication, whether it's for books, magazines, websites, or other media. Their goal is to enhance the readability and professionalism of the final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copy editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copy Editor, you need a strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word's track changes, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help Copy Editors excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring error-free, clear, and consistent content that meets publication standards and deadlines.

How do copy editors typically collaborate with writers and other editorial team members during the editing process?

Copy editors work closely with writers to clarify meaning, improve readability, and ensure consistency in style and tone. They often communicate suggested changes and questions through tracked edits or comments, fostering open dialogue to refine the content. Collaboration with other editorial team members, such as fact-checkers or managing editors, is also common to ensure accuracy and adherence to publication standards. Regular meetings and digital collaboration tools help maintain workflow efficiency and resolve any editorial concerns promptly.

What is the difference between Copy Editor vs Proofreader?

Understanding these roles helps in selecting the right professional for your publishing needs.

Are copy editors still in demand?

Copy editors remain in demand across publishing, media, and corporate sectors due to the ongoing need for clear, accurate content. Strong editing skills, familiarity with style guides, and proficiency with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Adobe InCopy enhance job prospects in this field.

Digital Production Editor

The Wall Street Journal

Job description

Job Description:

Digital Production Editor

The Wall Street Journal is looking for experienced Digital Production Editors to join our newly formed Digital Production Team, an integral part of our New York publishing hub.

This role merges two distinct editorial disciplines into one: the rigorous copy-editing standards of our Publishing Desk with the strategic programming and audience development expertise of our Platforms team. Digital Production Editors will be expected to move fluidly between both functions, bringing deep competency in each. This is not a role with a learning curve on the core skills. You are already fluent in both.

The Digital Production Team curates and publishes content across WSJ's digital platforms, provides editorial support to news editors as required, and shapes how our journalism reaches and engages readers on phone and web.

We need our Digital Production Editors to show strong initiative, be able to take and own decisions and not wait to be told what to do. You will demonstrate a keen eye for detail and a good understanding of how visual assets help to drive a narrative. It is essential that you are curious about technical innovation and enthusiastic to embrace, test and suggest new ideas.

The role is based in the New York newsroom, with a minimum of three days per week in the office. This position will include at least one weekend day and requires flexibility around evenings.

You will:

  • Edit copy to the highest standards of grammar, style, accuracy and clarity, quickly, on deadline, and without a second pass

  • Independently make packaging and presentation decisions across breaking news, features and enterprise journalism with strong, confident news judgment, not waiting for direction

  • Write headlines optimized for SEO and digital engagement, captions, sells and push alerts that are sharp, on-brand and audience-aware

  • Execute daily programming decisions across WSJ platforms, including app and desktop homepages, push notifications and email alerts, using audience data to inform curation in real time

  • Apply a sophisticated knowledge of SEO principles across all relevant fields, tags and headline structures

  • Craft display text for off-platform distribution across channels including Google, social and aggregators

  • Apply metadata, in-house coding and all technical publishing requirements correctly and consistently without reference. This is a baseline expectation

  • Troubleshoot digital publishing issues as they arise, escalating when appropriate and resolving when possible

  • Liaise with the London production hub to ensure seamless publishing continuity across time zones

  • Collaborate directly with reporters, coverage editors, and audience, strategy and social teams to execute audience-first publishing

  • Uphold Dow Jones standards and ethics in every editorial decision

You have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in digital news editing, platform curation, or a role that required both, with demonstrable competency across copy editing and digital programming

  • A track record of strong, independent news judgment under deadline pressure

  • Expert-level proficiency with digital publishing tools, metadata and newsroom workflows, not just an enthusiasm for learning them

  • Deep, applied knowledge of SEO best practices and audience data platforms, with the ability to act on both in real time

  • Experience curating digital homepages, app feeds or equivalent native platform surfaces

  • Fluency editing across media types: text, graphics, captions, push copy and social

  • The ability to work independently and as a team contributor with equal effectiveness

  • Composure and flexibility in a fast-moving, high-stakes editorial environment

To apply, please submit a resume and a cover letter explaining how your skills, experience and interests align with the expectations of the role by August 21st. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.
