What is copy editing?

Copy editing is the process of reviewing and correcting written material to improve accuracy, readability, and consistency. Copy editors check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style errors, ensuring that the text adheres to a specific style guide. They may also fact-check information and suggest changes to clarify or enhance the content. The goal is to produce clear, error-free writing that effectively communicates its intended message.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copy editor, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Copy Editor, you need excellent language proficiency, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of grammar, style, and punctuation, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and content management systems, as well as style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help Copy Editors stand out. These skills are crucial to ensure written content is clear, accurate, and consistent, which upholds the quality and credibility of publications.

What are some common challenges copy editors face when balancing quality and deadlines?

Effective time management and attention to detail are crucial, and many copy editors develop strategies such as prioritizing tasks and using style guides to streamline their workflow. Despite the pressure, collaborating with writers and other editors helps ensure the final product meets both quality and timeline expectations.

Job description

The whole reason for our existence is to grow ourselves in order to grow those around us. This means exploring, failing, and trying again. We believe that through trial and error, the best ideas are born. This is why we promote Fearless Failure, allowing each team member to eliminate apprehension and go all-in on presenting a new idea, even if it doesn't end up successful.
We believe in radical transparency, a way of communication that puts everything on the table. Everyone has the opportunity and responsibility to provide feedback and speak freely, no matter who presented the idea. This practice is easy when the news is good. It's when friction and disagreements occur that transparency becomes more difficult, more necessary, and far more impactful.
Our environment is built on the fundamentals of safety and trust, not comfort. Comfort leads to complacency, and complacency leads to dull ideas. Through safety and trust, we allow each team member to present ideas with the knowledge that he or she will be heard. This has allowed us to move quickly and create a further impact on each other and our clients.
Summary:
SSDM is looking for a Digital Content Coordinator to help the agency grow and produce effective content for our clients. This role supports the Digital Content Manager and collaborates with both the performance and creative teams to craft innovative ideas and execute on all things digital content.
Responsibilities:
  • Write copy for creative projects - this includes short and long-form content (blogs, social media, ad copy, landing pages, etc.)
  • Conduct SEO keyword research and write copy optimized for search engine that is entertaining and informative
  • Build web pages and add copy and images to various client websites (primarily WordPress)
  • Assist with the management and maintenance of content resource centers on client websites
  • Support SEO audits as it relates to research and content
  • Review and analyze client websites to identify areas that can be updated, improved and optimized
  • Mine data sources (surveys, Google Analytics reports, audits, user testing, etc.) to extract insights that evaluate client SEO and content campaigns against KPIs
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of content calendars
  • Editing, proofing + QA on projects
  • Stay current on best practices in the industry and review competitor websites to compare their activities with those of your company
  • Proactively self-teach on your assigned platforms and tools

The requirement details:
  • Bachelor's degree in Advertising, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work quickly, creatively and accurately, completing assigned tasks within deadline (or before)
  • Knowledge and experience in using website CMS (primarily Wordpress)
  • Intermediate (to advanced) familiarly with AP style
  • Experience and ability to work within Google systems (Docs, Drive, Sheets, etc.)
  • Ability to learn new technology and marketing platforms quickly
  • Ability to adjust writing style based on brand standards provided
  • SEO copywriting experience
  • Strong organizational, time management and analytical skills
  • Ongoing drive to push the creative envelope and keep up with digital trends
  • Willingness to learn and be adaptable to change
  • Familiarity with SEO search tools (Moz, SEMrush, etc.)
  • Ability to conceive fresh and appealing ideas for new content that establishes or supports the company's brand identity
  • Advanced written communication skills and an ability to read copy in English
  • Experience with social media engagement strategies and best practices
  • Strong skills in creating original content that targets a specific audience and meets company objective

The mindset.
  • Fearless failure. Perfection does not exist. But we try our best every day to do the right thing and try new things. Support our clients and innovate in the work.
  • Team mentality first. The sum is always greater than the one.
  • Problem-solving minded and innovation-focused: Asking questions like what if, how can we? What if it was possible? What if we could? What if we did? And what if we didn't.
  • Change inviting and agility. The only thing constant is change. We are built for the changing digital ecosystem.
  • Radical transparency. All cards on the table approach. Transparency is more than just being honest, it's being open-minded, leading with empathy and respect.
  • Empathy. This means putting yourself in other people's shoes, it is not enough to be sympathetic, it is the human component of empathy and listening to understand.
  • Value alignment. We believe success comes from aligning organizational values with others who share the same values. The right people and the right clients.
  • People first. We believe the right people is the most important thing for success.
  • Complacency is where great work goes to die. We are not a check the box, overstructured agency. We are a creative performance-driven agency that thrives in growth and innovation, which requires constant growth and evolution. People who value formality over adaptability will hate working with us and we're OK with that.
  • Long game planning. We are excellent problem solvers but we also are always looking ahead for the long game. Winning is not about one short term success. It's doing the right thing every day in micro-moments consistently.
  • Lean in. Lean into unknowns, conflict, and get uncomfortable. This is where true success happens. Be honest.
  • Bring passion and purpose.
  • Solution Seeking. As people change so will the problems. And as easy as it is to point out all of the problems and their complexities, our energy and effort must be dedicated to finding solutions that remedy those problems and provide value to those with whom we partner.

What We Offer
  • A fast-paced, ever-changing and exciting environment
  • A collaborative culture that embodies teamwork but where accountability is required
  • Full-time-hybrid, salary position + profit sharing

We offer several medical plan options with SSDM contributing to premiums, plus dental and vision coverage.
Access to multiple 401(k) plan types, with a company match of up to 3% of your contributions. Available after your 90 days of employment.
Paid Time Off (PTO): 10 days annually, available after 90 days of employment.
Paid Holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
