What does a copy editing manager do?

A Copy Editing Manager oversees a team of copy editors to ensure written materials are accurate, consistent, and meet editorial standards. They assign editing tasks, review and revise content, and provide guidance to maintain quality and style across all publications. Additionally, they often collaborate with writers, designers, and other departments to ensure that all content aligns with organizational goals and brand voice. Their role is essential in producing error-free, clear, and engaging content.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a copy editing manager?

To thrive as a Copy Editing Manager, you need a strong command of grammar, style, and editorial standards, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing tools like Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word’s Track Changes, and style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Exceptional leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to give constructive feedback are standout soft skills in this position. These skills ensure high-quality, consistent output and effective team collaboration, which are critical for maintaining editorial excellence.

How does a copy editing manager collaborate with writers and other editorial staff to maintain quality standards?

A Copy Editing Manager works closely with writers, editors, and sometimes designers to ensure all content meets the publication’s style, tone, and quality guidelines. They often lead editorial meetings, provide feedback or training to their team, and create or update style guides as needed. Regular communication is essential, as the manager coordinates schedules, assigns editing tasks, and addresses any content issues collaboratively. This teamwork ensures consistency across all published materials and helps resolve challenges quickly.
