What is a copper pipe fitter?

Copper pipe fitters are skilled tradespeople who specialize in assembling, installing, and maintaining piping systems made from copper. These professionals commonly work on plumbing, heating, cooling, and sometimes industrial piping projects. Their work involves cutting, bending, and joining copper pipes to ensure safe and efficient water, gas, or HVAC system operation. Copper pipe fitters must be familiar with various joining techniques, such as soldering and brazing, and understand building codes and safety standards. They often work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copper pipe fitter?

To thrive as a Copper Pipe Fitter, you need strong manual dexterity, knowledge of plumbing codes, and the ability to read blueprints, typically gained through an apprenticeship or vocational training. Familiarity with pipe cutting tools, soldering equipment, and pressure testing systems is essential for the technical aspects of the job. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set outstanding pipe fitters apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe, precise installations and efficient collaboration with other trades on construction sites.

What are some common challenges copper pipe fitters face on the job, and how can they be managed?

Copper Pipe Fitters often encounter challenges such as working in tight or awkward spaces, dealing with complex piping layouts, and ensuring joints are leak-free. Managing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with specialized tools like pipe benders and soldering equipment. Job description

Pipefitter – Commercial Construction

Kodiak Labor Solutions | Chesterfield, VA • East Richmond, VA • Thornburg, VA
$30–$39/hour | Full-Time | Temp-to-Hire

Kodiak Labor Solutions is hiring experienced Pipefitters for commercial mechanical construction projects at three separate jobsite locations: Chesterfield, East Richmond, and Thornburg, VA.

These are full-time, temp-to-hire opportunities for experienced commercial pipefitters who can read drawings, lay out piping, cut and thread pipe, install piping systems, and work safely and productively on an active construction site.

You will be assigned to a project location based on hiring needs and fit — these are separate jobsites, not a position requiring daily travel between all three locations.

If you can take a commercial piping installation from layout through pressure testing, we want to talk with you.

For You

  • $30–$39/hour, based on experience

  • Full-time commercial construction work

  • Temp-to-hire opportunity

  • Multiple project locations in the Richmond/Central Virginia area

  • Opportunity for long-term employment based on performance and project needs

What You Will Do

  • Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine piping layouts and installation requirements

  • Lay out, measure, cut, thread, fit, assemble, and install commercial piping systems

  • Install pipe, valves, fittings, supports, and related piping components

  • Work with piping materials including steel, iron, copper, brass, and plastic

  • Use pipe cutters, Port-a-Band saws, reciprocating saws, torches, threading machines, and other pipefitting tools

  • Join piping using threading, grooving, soldering, brazing, fittings, and solvent-weld methods

  • Lay out pipe runs, connections, penetrations, openings, and equipment connections

  • Install piping accurately according to drawings, measurements, elevations, and specifications

  • Pressure-test completed piping systems and identify and repair leaks

  • Recognize potential installation conflicts and communicate issues before they affect the work

  • Coordinate piping installations with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other construction trades

  • Maintain a productive work area and follow all company, OSHA, and jobsite safety requirements

What We Are Seeking

  • 4+ years of commercial pipefitting or mechanical construction experience

  • Hands-on experience installing piping systems on commercial construction projects

  • Ability to read and work independently from blueprints, drawings, and specifications

  • Strong experience with pipe layout, measurement, cutting, threading, fitting, grooving, and installation

  • Experience with steel, iron, copper, and/or plastic piping systems

  • Working knowledge of threaded, grooved, soldered, and brazed piping systems

  • Ability to accurately determine pipe runs, measurements, elevations, and connection points

  • Experience pressure-testing piping and troubleshooting leaks

  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA safety requirements and piping/plumbing codes

  • Ability to identify field conflicts and make sound installation decisions

  • Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with foremen and other trades

  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, productivity, and teamwork
