What is copper brazing?

A Copper Brazing job involves joining copper or copper alloy parts by heating them and applying a filler metal with a lower melting point than the base metals. The process requires precise heat control and flux to ensure a strong, leak-proof bond. Workers in this role commonly assemble HVAC components, plumbing systems, or industrial equipment. It requires knowledge of metallurgy, torch handling, and safety procedures. Skilled copper brazers ensure durable and high-quality connections in manufacturing and construction applications.

What skills and qualifications are needed for copper brazing?

To thrive in a Copper Brazing role, you need a strong understanding of metal joining techniques, blueprint reading, and experience with industrial brazing equipment, typically supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with torches, fluxes, safety gear, and often certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society) brazing credentials are valuable. Attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to work well in a team environment are important soft skills. These competencies ensure high-quality, reliable brazed joints and maintain safety and productivity standards in manufacturing or repair settings.

What are the typical working conditions for copper brazing?

Copper Brazing professionals usually work in manufacturing plants, HVAC assembly shops, or metal fabrication environments, where they may stand for extended periods and work with high temperatures and specialized equipment. The role often requires wearing personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and flame-resistant clothing to ensure safety. Depending on the employer, you could work independently or as part of a team, collaborating with welders, quality inspectors, or engineers to meet production goals. Some positions may require overtime or shift work, especially during high demand periods. Understanding these conditions can help you determine if the job matches your preferences and work style.

Do you have to be certified to braze copper?

Copper brazing is a skilled trade that often requires training and certification, especially for commercial or industrial work. Certification can improve job prospects and ensure safety standards are met, but requirements vary by region and employer. Practical experience and knowledge of safety procedures are also important for this role.

Built from the ground up by real tradespeople-not investors-we take pride in doing things the right way: delivering high-quality work, standing behind what we build, and treating people with integrity.
We are currently looking for an experienced Refrigeration Pipefitter specializing in large-scale installation projects. Our team performs extensive rack and refrigeration work for major grocery, retail, and commercial clients across Florida . Key Responsibilities
Pipe Installation
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan pipe layout and installation.
  • Evaluate copper line runs for various systems, including traditional ACR copper, Type L copper for glycol systems, and HXP pipe for CO2 systems.
  • Identify layout requirements and install hangers and saddles to support system integrity.
  • Measure and cut pipes and tubing to the required length and angle.
  • Perform professional nitrogen purging and flowing to ensure system cleanliness and prevent oxidation.
  • Assemble and install pipes, fittings, and fixtures such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, and expansion valves.
  • Brazing Expertise - Braze refrigeration line sets, new cases, solenoid valves, ball valves, and other critical components into place.
  • Ensure proper insulation and sealing of refrigerant lines to prevent energy loss and leaks.

System Integrity & Maintenance
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify and address system malfunctions, leaks, or inefficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose refrigeration system issues and perform necessary repairs.
  • Safely handle and recover refrigerants in compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Charge and evacuate refrigeration systems with the appropriate refrigerants.
  • Perform leak detection and repair as needed.

Safety & Collaboration
  • Adhere to safety guidelines, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Identify potential safety hazards and take corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including equipment specifications and repairs.
  • Work closely with other tradespeople and communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and timelines.

Requirements
  • Experience: Proven experience as a Pipefitter, typically 2-5 years of relevant experience in commercial refrigeration.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Deep understanding of refrigeration systems, equipment, and components, specifically regarding copper pipework for refrigeration rack systems.
  • Advanced Brazing: Mastery of brazing techniques using oxyacetylene torch equipment; deep knowledge of purging and flowing nitrogen to prevent oxidation; firm understanding of pressure testing circuits.
  • Compliance: Familiarity with refrigerant handling and EPA regulations.
  • Problem Solving: Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work in various environmental conditions and meet the physical demands of pipe installation.
  • Certifications: EPA (Universal preferred), OSHA 10, Scissor Lift, Forklift, and Rigging & Signaling. All certifications are preferred and can be obtained after hire.
