What is copper brazing?

A Copper Brazing job involves joining copper or copper alloy parts by heating them and applying a filler metal with a lower melting point than the base metals. The process requires precise heat control and flux to ensure a strong, leak-proof bond. Workers in this role commonly assemble HVAC components, plumbing systems, or industrial equipment. It requires knowledge of metallurgy, torch handling, and safety procedures. Skilled copper brazers ensure durable and high-quality connections in manufacturing and construction applications.

What skills and qualifications are needed for copper brazing?

To thrive in a Copper Brazing role, you need a strong understanding of metal joining techniques, blueprint reading, and experience with industrial brazing equipment, typically supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with torches, fluxes, safety gear, and often certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society) brazing credentials are valuable. Attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to work well in a team environment are important soft skills. These competencies ensure high-quality, reliable brazed joints and maintain safety and productivity standards in manufacturing or repair settings.

What are the typical working conditions for copper brazing?

Copper Brazing professionals usually work in manufacturing plants, HVAC assembly shops, or metal fabrication environments, where they may stand for extended periods and work with high temperatures and specialized equipment. The role often requires wearing personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and flame-resistant clothing to ensure safety. Depending on the employer, you could work independently or as part of a team, collaborating with welders, quality inspectors, or engineers to meet production goals. Some positions may require overtime or shift work, especially during high demand periods. Understanding these conditions can help you determine if the job matches your preferences and work style.

Do you have to be certified to braze copper?

Copper brazing is a skilled trade that often requires training and certification, especially for commercial or industrial work. Certification can improve job prospects and ensure safety standards are met, but requirements vary by region and employer. Practical experience and knowledge of safety procedures are also important for this role.

Job description

HVAC/R Fabrication, Remanufacturing & Commissioning Technician
The Refrigeration Company – Sacramento, CA

We are seeking experienced commercial and industrial HVAC/R technicians to join our team. This role centers on the fabrication, remanufacturing, and commissioning of specialized process cooling and waste heat reclaim systems primarily serving the cannabis cultivation industry.

About the Role

The majority of the work takes place in our warehouse facility, where you will fabricate and remanufacture equipment using hard-drawn copper and related materials. You will also support startup and commissioning activities, which may include occasional field work and travel outside California.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Fabricating and remanufacturing commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems
  • Working primarily with hard-drawn pipe; bending is preferred whenever practical
  • Performing high-quality nitrogen-purged brazing
  • Ensuring precise layout, measurement, and clean, professional appearance of all piping and assemblies
  • Recovering, evacuating, and charging systems
  • Working with commercial components including accumulators, oil separators, receivers, sight glasses, ball valves, check valves, and related auxiliary vessels
  • Reading, interpreting, and working from wiring diagrams
  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Learning system design and operation thoroughly to support startup, commissioning, and field troubleshooting
  • Supporting occasional field startup and commissioning work (approximately 50% of equipment is installed outside California, including locations such as New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington)

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on commercial and/or industrial HVAC/R installation and service experience
  • Current EPA Section 608 certification
  • Demonstrated expertise in nitrogen-purged brazing
  • Strong understanding of commercial refrigeration system components and their function
  • Proficiency with tubing benders and accurate measuring/layout practices
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply wiring diagrams
  • Working knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), including basic troubleshooting
  • Solid service and troubleshooting background to support commissioning activities
  • Willingness to travel periodically for startup and commissioning
  • Ability to learn new equipment designs, control systems (DDC/PLC), and processes quickly
  • Strong attention to detail and workmanship standards

This position offers the opportunity to apply commercial refrigeration skills in a primarily shop-based environment while still participating in system startup and commissioning. Candidates with a strong foundation in commercial/industrial systems and a commitment to quality workmanship are encouraged to apply.

Please submit a brief summary of your relevant commercial experience, with emphasis on brazing, piping practices, component knowledge, wiring diagrams, VFDs, and troubleshooting background.
