Job description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It's why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It's why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it's why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it's worth paying for.
About the Team
The Developer Platforms organization provides cloud infrastructure and tooling to 100+ teams and 750+ engineers in NYT Product Engineering through an internal developer platform. The DevEx Platforms team (6 engineers) focuses on developer experience and workflow automation.
We're now expanding into more AI-assisted developer workflows using tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot to support debugging, migrations, test generation, and everyday development in a safe, measurable way.
This role sits in Developer Platforms and reports to the Engineering Manager of the DevEx Platforms team.
About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer on DevEx Platforms, you'll build GenAI-augmented developer experiences and platform capabilities used across all of The New York Times.
Your work will help teams ship faster and more safely, pay down technical debt through structured migrations and platform modernization, and turn effective internal practices into reusable tools and agents.
What You'll Do
  • Design and build GenAI-powered developer tooling: prompts, IDE integrations, Cursor/Claude rules, and telemetry to understand how they're used.
  • Build and run the GenAI developer platform: Tools, services, and integrations leveraging LiteLLM to power both local and background/long-running agents, providing auth, configuration, and LLM routing.
  • Own guardrails and observability for agentic workflows: integrate with Datadog, DX, and FinOut, define sensible standards, and make sure agents interact with Jira, GitHub, and internal platforms in a safe, auditable way.
  • Work closely with engineers and managers across Product Engineering to understand how they build software today and to design solutions that actually fit the way they work.
  • Support our mission and values, including journalistic independence, and keep ethics and safety central to how we use AI in developer workflows.
  • This role includes limited on-call responsibilities; the schedule will be set when you join.Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Engineering Manager of the DevEx Platforms team
Basic Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • 2+ years of experience improving developer experience through workflows, documentation, and capabilities of the internal platform.
  • Experience designing and building cloud native applications using Golang
  • Hands-on experience building software using GenAI tools, like GitHub's Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of hands on experience managing and deploying resources in AWS.
  • 2+ years of experience managing workloads deployed on Kubernetes.
  • Experience in prompt engineering or building AI-powered tools.

This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
#LI-Hybrid
REQ-020128
The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$140,000-$160,000 USD
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
We're excited to learn more about you and your experience. To keep our hiring process as fair and authentic as possible, we ask that you submit your own work and not use GenAI tools to generate substantive content during the application and interview process.
If you're an Engineering candidate, we'll let you know what specific GenAI tools you are permitted to use for your technical assessment.
