What is conversion rate optimisation?

Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is the process of increasing the percentage of website visitors who take a desired action, such as making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or filling out a form. This is achieved by analyzing user behavior, testing different website elements, and implementing changes to improve user experience and encourage conversions. CRO involves strategies like A/B testing, improving website design, optimizing calls to action, and minimizing barriers to conversion. The ultimate goal is to maximize the effectiveness of a website and increase return on investment from existing traffic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a conversion rate optimisation specialist?

To thrive as a Conversion Rate Optimisation Specialist, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of digital marketing principles, and experience with A/B testing and data interpretation, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, Optimizely, Hotjar, and other CRO platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, creativity, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate with teams and design effective experiments. These skills are vital for increasing website conversions, enhancing user experience, and driving business growth through data-driven decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in conversion rate optimisation roles?

One common challenge in Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is balancing quick wins with long-term strategic improvements, as stakeholders often expect immediate results from experiments and A/B tests. Additionally, CRO specialists frequently need to navigate conflicting opinions between marketing, design, and development teams while ensuring that data-driven recommendations are implemented effectively. Another challenge is obtaining sufficient traffic and statistically significant results, which can limit the speed and confidence of decision-making. Successful CRO professionals thrive by communicating clearly, prioritizing impactful tests, and fostering a culture of experimentation within their organizations.

Role Overview

The Director, Growth leads the execution of growth marketing programs that drive customer acquisition, funnel performance, and revenue expansion within a defined channel, segment, or portfolio. Reporting to the EVP, Business Development, this role turns growth strategy into action — building program roadmaps, running structured tests, and demonstrating measurable results across the funnel.

This is a hands-on role and requires close, day-to-day partnership with marketing, sales, product, and customer success teams to keep growth initiatives moving.

Bringing our core values — Curiosity, Fearlessness, Teamwork, and Leadership — to life is central to this role: staying curious about what's working and what isn't, having the courage to test bold new approaches, rallying cross-functional partners around a shared growth agenda, and leading stakeholders through challenges with clarity and care.

LOCATION

Candidates must be located in the Chicago Metro area. This will be a hybrid role, requiring both in-office and remote work.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and execute comprehensive growth strategies to increase revenue, market share, and customer base.
  • Identify and assess new business opportunities, markets, and partnerships to drive growth.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to implement growth initiatives, including marketing, sales, product development, and customer success.
  • Analyze market trends, customer data, and competitive landscape to inform growth strategies and decision-making.
  • Optimize the sales funnel and customer acquisition processes to improve conversion rates and customer lifetime value.
  • Provide insight and report on the performance of growth strategies, providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Work closely with the EVP, Business Development to ensure alignment between growth strategies and overall business objectives.
  • Collaborate on the development and execution of go-to-market strategies for new products and services.

Requirements:

What You’ll Bring

  • In-depth knowledge of growth strategies and best practices, including customer acquisition, retention, and expansion.
  • 10+ years prior success in business development/sales within an agency environment.
  • Understanding of digital marketing, sales automation, and CRM technologies.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends and innovations in the growth space, such as AI, machine learning, and predictive analytics.
  • Knowledge of market research, competitive analysis, and customer segmentation techniques.
  • Understanding of the customer journey and experience design principles.
  • Awareness of industry-specific regulations and standards related to growth initiatives.
  • Understanding of the competitive landscape and market dynamics within various industries.
  • Knowledge of financial management principles, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and capitalize on growth opportunities.
  • Deep understanding of sales, marketing, and customer acquisition strategies.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate at the executive level.
  • Proficiency in growth hacking tools and techniques, including A/B testing, conversion rate optimization, and funnel analysis.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial management related to growth initiatives.
  • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

The hiring range for this role is $145,000 - $165,000. Where an employee is paid within this range will depend on multiple factors including, but not limited to location, years of experience, education, internal pay structure, and other contributing factors.
