What is a Conversational AI Designer?

A Conversational AI Designer is a professional who creates and optimizes the user experience for AI-powered chatbots, virtual assistants, and voice interfaces. They design the flow of conversations, write dialogue, and ensure that users can interact naturally and effectively with AI systems. Their work involves understanding user needs, applying best practices in conversational UX, and collaborating with developers and stakeholders to deliver intuitive, human-like interactions. Conversational AI Designers often use specialized tools and frameworks to build and test these interactions across various platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Conversational AI Designer?

To thrive as a Conversational AI Designer, you need a solid grasp of linguistics, UX/UI principles, and conversational flow design, often supported by experience in computational linguistics or human-computer interaction. Familiarity with chatbot development platforms (like Dialogflow or Microsoft Bot Framework), prototyping tools, and understanding of natural language processing (NLP) systems is typically required. Strong creativity, empathy, and communication skills help designers create user-centric, engaging, and intuitive conversational experiences. These skills are crucial for building effective AI interactions that enhance user satisfaction and achieve business goals.

What are some common challenges Conversational AI Designers face when designing chatbot interactions for diverse user groups?

Conversational AI Designers often encounter challenges in creating chatbot interactions that are both intuitive and accessible for a wide range of users. Factors such as varying communication styles, language nuances, and differing levels of tech-savviness can impact user experience. Designers must also ensure that conversations are inclusive and handle edge cases gracefully, balancing business goals with user needs. Regular user testing and iterating on feedback are key strategies to overcome these challenges and improve conversation flow.

Job Description

At LinkedIn, our approach to flexible work is centered on trust and optimized for culture, connection, clarity, and the evolving needs of our business. This role will be based in Sunnyvale, San Francisco or New York.

The workforce is evolving at a scale and pace unseen since the Industrial Revolution, and LinkedIn Search is uniquely positioned to help. Join us as we transform LinkedIn Search from a traditional jobs and people lookup tool into an indispensable, AI-powered partner that connects 1B+ global users to economic opportunity.

As a Senior Product Designer, you will shape the future of next-gen search, content discovery, and conversational AI experiences. Operating at the intersection of deep technical architecture and human-centered design, you will lead zero-to-one initiatives within a mature global platform, turning ambitious AI capabilities into intuitive, beautiful, and transformative products.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect Next-Gen Search & AI Experiences: Lead the end-to-end design of conversational AI, content discovery, and search interfaces across platforms. Craft experiences specifically optimized for non-deterministic outcomes

  • Bridge Design, Science, and Deep Tech: Partner hand-in-hand with Engineering, Product, and AI Research Scientists to navigate complex search tech stacks. Leverage your technical aptitude to inform model requirements, system instructions, and cross-functional product strategy.

  • Rapid Interactive Prototyping: Utilize advanced prototyping tools and AI-driven workflows to simulate live model responses, build interactive concepts, and validate dynamic user flows in rapid experimentation loops.

  • Drive Vision Through Systems Thinking: Apply a rigorous systems-thinking approach to ensure individual UI components integrate seamlessly into a cohesive, global product ecosystem. Drive clarity out of ambiguity and shepherd radical, divergent ideas from initial concept to launch.

  • Design for Responsible Global Impact: Craft visual, motion, and interaction patterns that set industry benchmarks. Ensure every experience adheres to world-class standards in localization, usability, safety, accessibility, and ethical AI.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in graphic design, design communication, human-computer interaction, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 5+ years of product design experience, with a portfolio demonstrating leadership on complex, high-impact consumer products.

  • Proven ability to lead design in ambiguous and technically rigorous problem spaces, setting direction and driving alignment across multiple partners or teams.

  • Background in interaction and visual design expertise, with a refined sense of typography, layout, hierarchy, and motion.

  • Deep UX fundamentals, including information architecture, system-level thinking, and designing for engagement and retention at scale.

  • Fluency in Figma and modern prototyping workflows, with the ability to move between low- and high-fidelity as needed.

  • Data-informed mindset, comfortable partnering with research and analytics to shape hypotheses, evaluate outcomes, and iterate.

  • Experience in communication and storytelling skills, including experience presenting to senior leaders and influencing without authority.

  • Experience understanding accessibility standards and inclusive design best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated AI & Search Expertise: Extensive experience designing complex software applications with specific expertise in consumer search including conversational AI, model tuning using reinforcement learning, supervised fine-tuning, and other industry best practices to deliver high-quality user outcomes.

  • Proven Track Record of Impact: A history of shepherding radical ideas, fostering divergent design thinking, and shipping transformative zero-to-one products within scaled, highly matrixed environments.

  • Deep Technical Aptitude: Comfort navigating technical architecture and working directly with AI/ML engineering teams. Experience using system instructions, AI tools, and interactive prototyping platforms (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Figma) to shape UX requirements.

  • Systems & Craft Mastery: Exceptional fluency across visual design, motion design, interaction patterns, and scalable design systems across desktop and mobile platforms.

  • Data-Informed & Action-Oriented: Ability to leverage behavioral data and user research methodologies to evaluate AI interactions, paired with the strong intuition needed to move forward confidently in the absence of data.

  • Executive Communication & Storytelling: Outstanding communication, facilitation, and storytelling skills, with a proven ability to articulate design rationale clearly and influence strategy across executive partners.
