NorthStar Energy Services is seeking an experienced and technically strong Sr. Designer to join the Professional Engineering Consulting team in Arlington or Houston, Texas. This role requires hands-on leadership for complex deliverables while supporting project execution under the direction of the Design Supervisor and Engineering Manager.


Design

  • Develop and locate electrical and instrumentation (I&E) equipment within a 3D model environment using AutoCAD, CADWorx, and Navisworks in coordination with engineers and multi-discipline design teams.
  • Design site-specific power distribution and control systems in accordance with company, client, and applicable industry standards for integration into new or existing facilities.
  • Interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to establish project scope and design requirements.
  • Prepare design drawings and concept sketches to support construction execution, change orders, cost estimates, and field activities.
  • Generate and maintain required project documentation, including status reports, punch lists, as-built sketches, and material quantity calculations.

Detailed Design and Documentation

  • Develop orthographic plan and layout drawings from 2D and 3D models for installation of power and control systems, including hazardous area classification, conduit routing, cable tray, grounding, and instrument locations, in accordance with company and client standards.
  • Produce detailed installation drawings for electrical and instrumentation equipment.
  • Size cabinets, panelboards, cables, cable tray, and conduit in accordance with applicable codes, project scope, and vendor data.
  • Prepare required one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and loop diagrams for power and control systems.
  • Demonstrate recent experience producing construction-ready electrical and control system documentation.
  • Apply established quality control processes and checklists, maintaining ownership and accountability for completed work.

Deliverable Management and Coordination

  • Research, review, and apply company standards, municipal requirements, and applicable regulatory codes.
  • Perform independent QA/QC reviews of I&E design deliverables.
  • Verify that structural and site-development layouts align with overall project design intent.
  • Support Professional Engineers during the design phase, including standards review, collection of calculation inputs, permitting requirements, and other engineering support activities.
  • Coordinate I&E design requirements with multi-discipline project teams.
  • Review drawings from other disciplines to ensure coordination and consistency with I&E systems.
  • Review and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review third-party vendor drawings to confirm compatibility with the intended I&E design.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in power distribution or controls systems design.
  • All qualified candidates will be required to complete an in-person, computer-based assessment.

Technical Expertise

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of current experience with AutoCAD, CADWorx, Navisworks, and Microsoft Office.
  • Detailed knowledge in the application of Codes and current Standards, including but not limited to:
    • National Electrical Code (NEC)
    • ANSI/ISA-5.1-2022
    • API-RP500
  • Ability to independently research and interpret equipment data, vendor documentation, and technical references.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with designers, engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders.
