Job description

BMG is an award-winning thermoforming packaging/automation solutions leader focused on a customer-centric approach. We develop solutions that meet and exceed the unique requirements of each customer’s application. BMG is a global organization representing the world’s most extensive thermoforming portfolio in the following industries: automotive, medical, electronics, horticulture, food, and process automation.

We are searching for a Controls Engineer with experience in electrical design as well as experience in programming PLCs or motion-controlled systems. This position is located in Beaverton, MI with the option of hybrid work once initial training has been completed.

Our Controls Engineers are responsible for designing, programming, updating, and troubleshooting various PLC based control systems. They are responsible for electrical/controls design modifications to standard equipment and new equipment design. We have a distributed team of engineers that collaborate across our sites on thermoforming packaging solutions. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, can work in a team environment, has the ability to plan, schedule and problem solve effectively, and can work independently with little or no supervision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Make necessary electrical panel layout drawings, electrical designs, and electrical CAD schematics to ensure design meets industry and regulatory standards and project requirements.
  2. Make appropriate calculations, research performance standards and component selection to ensure design specifications are met.
  3. Design various sections of equipment to meet required specifications.
  4. Prepare bills of material and other paperwork per internal standards.
  5. Attend and participate in design reviews for evaluation of work order requirements to design, and cost implications.
  6. Design and develop machine logic in PLC, operator interface applications and program servo motion controls.
  7. Change drawings in accordance with ECO procedure.
  8. Check drawings and bills of materials as relates to assigned projects.
  9. Ensure design considerations, concepts, and software codes are documented.
  10. Represent design team in work order reviews and final design reviews as required.
  11. Start-up and debug machine prior to shipment.
  12. Assists in field start-up and solving machine problems in field.
  13. Direct various design activities on assigned projects.
  14. Review with design team to ensure quality and internal design practices are being met.
  15. Travel as required for the role.

EDUCATION / REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a minimum of 1 year work experience in a manufacturing environment.
  2. Working knowledge of controls (PLC, HMI, and Motion Controlled Programs)
  3. Working knowledge of electrical engineering design practices.
  4. Excellent written and oral communication skills on a technical level.
  5. A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.
