Frederick, MD | Direct Hire | Manufacturing & Automation

LHH Recruitment Solutions is partnering with a growing manufacturer of highly engineered HVAC and environmental control systems to identify an Electrical Controls Engineer for their Frederick, Maryland facility.
This is an excellent opportunity to join an innovative engineering team developing advanced control solutions for mission-critical equipment used in demanding commercial and industrial environments. The organization is experiencing continued growth and offers engineers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of automation, controls, product development, and commissioning projects. The company operates in the precision HVAC and environmental controls space.
Position Overview
The Electrical Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design, programming, testing, implementation, and support of electrical control systems used in sophisticated climate control equipment. This individual will work closely with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Production, and Field Service teams to ensure reliable system performance from concept through commissioning.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on automation work, PLC/HMI programming, troubleshooting complex systems, and seeing projects through from design to field startup.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design electrical control systems including schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Develop and program PLC and HMI applications utilizing platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and Automation Direct.
  • Create electrical documentation including bills of material, test procedures, work instructions, and system specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Conduct testing, validation, and functional verification of new control systems and product designs.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues related to PLCs, HMIs, sensors, drives, and communication networks.
  • Support equipment startup, commissioning, and field installations at customer locations as needed.
  • Partner with customers and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and improve system performance.
  • Lead and support controls upgrades, automation initiatives, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, drawings, and as-built records.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, safety requirements, and industry standards.
  • Stay current on emerging controls technologies, automation platforms, and industry best practices.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or electrical system design.
  • Experience programming PLCs and HMIs in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, Ethernet/IP, or similar.
  • Experience creating electrical schematics and control panel designs utilizing AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities involving electrical hardware and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, control logic, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent communication and project coordination skills.
Preferred
  • Experience with HVAC equipment, building automation systems (BMS), or environmental control systems.
  • Experience supporting field commissioning and startup activities.
  • Familiarity with NEC requirements and industrial electrical safety standards.
  • Experience working within a manufacturing or OEM environment.
