Job description

L&L Construction Group is a privately held family of construction companies providing comprehensive services through L&L Concrete, Inc., East Coast Civil Group, and Nova Casa Homes. As the organization continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support financial operations across multiple companies.

The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller and executive leadership to maintain accurate financial reporting, strengthen accounting processes, support operational decision-making, and promote continuous improvement across all business units. This role requires construction accounting experience, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-company environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting and Reporting

·        Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.

·        Maintain, reconcile, and analyze general ledger accounts for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with GAAP.

·        Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and support schedules.

·        Assist with preparing consolidated financial statements and management reports across multiple operating companies.

·        Perform variance analysis and identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

·        Develop and maintain standardized balance sheet reconciliation procedures across all companies.

Construction Accounting and Financial Analysis

·        Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, and executive financial reporting.

·        Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress schedules, including percentage-of-completion accounting, over/under billings, earned revenue, and project profitability.

·        Review job cost reports and collaborate with Operations and Project Management to ensure accurate financial reporting and cost to complete estimates.

·        Provide financial analysis to support strategic business decisions and operational performance.

Fixed Assets, Payroll, and Financial Systems. (Back up support for AP/AR and payroll).

·        Manage the fixed asset lifecycle, including capitalization, depreciation, additions, disposals, reconciliations, and physical asset verification.

·        Support annual audits and tax reporting related to fixed assets.

·        Provide backup support for weekly payroll processing, payroll tax payments, and related compliance requirements.

·        Assist with ERP and accounting software implementation, configuration, maintenance, and process improvement across all operating companies.

·        Recommend and implement improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.

Internal Controls and Compliance

·        Assist with developing and maintaining internal accounting controls and financial policies.

·        Ensure compliance with GAAP, applicable accounting standards, and company policies.

·        Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, maintaining documentation, and responding to audit inquiries.

·        Maintain accurate accounting records and support regulatory and tax compliance.

Leadership and Collaboration

·        Assist with supervising, mentoring, and developing accounting staff while promoting accountability and professional growth.

·        Review daily accounting activities for accuracy and compliance with company procedures.

·        Crosstrain with departments across the organization to better understand operational processes and identify opportunities to improve financial reporting.

·        Help develop and document standard operating procedures and best practices.

·        Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

·        Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

·        Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting or finance experience.

·        Construction accounting experience, including percentage-of-completion accounting, work-in-progress reporting, job costing, over/under billings, and multi-entity accounting.

·        Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling, pivot tables, lookups, and large data analysis.

·        Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and internal controls.

·        Ability to interpret complex financial data, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

·        Public accounting experience or CPA firm background.

·        Experience supporting multiple business entities or operating companies.

·        Experience with construction accounting software or ERP platforms.

·        Experience with ERP implementation, customization, integration, or optimization.

Work Schedule and Environment

This is a full-time, in-person position. Standard business hours are expected; however, occasional additional hours may be required during month-end close, year-end close, audits, budgeting cycles, reporting deadlines, or other business needs.

The role primarily requires working in an office environment, using a computer and standard office equipment, and communicating with employees, vendors, and business partners.
