Job description


The pharmacy intern supports licensed pharmacists in the delivery of comprehensive pharmaceutical care within the hospital environment. Responsibilities include assisting with sterile compounding and IV preparation, conducting medication history interviews, performing medication reconciliation, and providing medication-related education to patients and healthcare staff. The intern also engages in administrative support, participates in training and orientation activities, and contributes to clinical quality improvement initiatives, all under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
Responsibilities
  • Assists the pharmacist to provide prescribed pharmaceuticals for a designated patient population
    • Accurately performs bin-filling tasks, maintaining an error rate within the established monthly threshold. Rounds are completed within the designated time.
    • Prepares sterile compounds and IV medications with an error rate that does not exceed the established monthly standard
    • Provides pharmacists with timely and comprehensive medication history information
    • Assists pharmacists in medications reconciliation by identifying discrepancies and ensuring proper documentation
    • Assists with coordinating discharge medication counseling and documentation
  • Assists pharmacist in effectively communicating medication therapy recommendations to appropriate healthcare providers
    • Actively participates in interdisciplinary team discussions by sharing relevant medication-related information and incorporating team input to promote positive patient outcomes
    • Proactively notifies the healthcare team of any anticipated or actual delays in medication delivery, ensuring timely and coordinated patient care
  • Performs administrative and operational tasks to ensure the efficiency of pharmacy services
    • Process medication credits and returns upon patient discharge
    • Process controlled substance records, perform counts, file log sheets, and reports discrepancies in accordance with hospital policy
    • Organizes and files regulatory documents accurately and promptly
    • Assist with the onboard of new interns and pharmacy technicians by demonstrating administrative workflows
  • Assists in managing inventory and maintaining adequate medication and supply levels
    • Accurately retrieves, organizes, and stocks medications from the central pharmacy for the assigned work area before the end of each shift
    • Submits complete and accurate daily medication order requests to the designated buyer by the required deadline and promptly processes medication credits by returning unused or discontinued items to designated stock areas
    • Conducts and documents monthly medication storage area inspections
    • Communicates any stock shortages, backorders, or discrepancies to the pharmacist or inventory coordinator in a timely manner
  • Practices within legal, ethical, and professional boundaries

Qualifications
Education:
  • Required: Currently enrolled in an A.C.P.E. accredited college or university

Licensure or Certification:
  • Pharmacy Intern License with the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy

Experience:
  • Required: Completion of introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs) through academic program
  • Preferred: Prior experience in a community or hospital pharmacy setting

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of common prescription and non-prescription medications. Knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to ensure safe and effective drug dosing. Familiarity with physiological, anatomical, pathological, and chemical and mathematical concepts relevant to pharmacy practice. Ability to interpret medical terminologies, abbreviations, and pharmacological nomenclatures. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Use e-mail. Use electronic documentation processes.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Windows
Working Environment: Exposure to toxic substances such as chemotherapy agents. Continuous direct visual observation of a computer monitor
Physical Demands: Manual dexterity is required to handle vials, needles, and other apparatus. Repetitive use of hand and finger (i.e. use of computer keyboard). May be exposed to toxic substances such as chemotherapy agents. Must possess the mobility to move in the pharmacy and the hospital. May need to stand for an extended period of time. Normal range of hearing and vision to perform work and communicate. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
