What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Founded in 2000, MedOne designs, develops, manufactures, markets and distributes specialty microsurgical products for treating the retina. The founder-owned company is built on high-quality products delivered with outstanding customer service. MedOne products can be found in operating rooms throughout the US and worldwide. Our products are proudly manufactured in Sarasota and in compliance with all FDA, European and other global regulatory requirements.

WHY MEDONE

At MedOne Surgical, you can be part of a growing, entrepreneurial company where quality, innovation, responsiveness, and customer service matter. Our team works together in Sarasota to develop and deliver specialized surgical products used by healthcare professionals around the world. If you enjoy a hands-on environment where your work is visible, your contribution matters, and you can help strengthen a growing organization, MedOne offers an opportunity to make an impact.

This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys being close to the operation and can bring structure, accuracy, and discipline to a growing manufacturing environment. The Controller works directly with the President and CFO and plays an important role in helping leadership understand financial and operating performance.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Own the monthly close process and prepare timely, reliable financial statements and management reporting.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking transactions, and reconciliations.
  • Establish reliable inventory accounting and coordinate physical inventory counts and variance investigation.
  • Develop and maintain product costing, including material, labor, overhead, margins, and cost variances.
  • Coordinate the annual budget and periodic forecasts and maintain a 13-week cash forecast.
  • Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and segregation of duties.
  • Partner with operations to analyze profitability, inventory, labor efficiency, scrap and rework, purchasing trends, and other manufacturing cost drivers.
  • Support improvements to accounting, inventory, and ERP systems and the quality of financial and operational data.
  • Coordinate routine reporting and information requests with outside accountants, tax professionals, auditors, and other service providers.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience with hands-on responsibility for month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Hands-on inventory and product or cost accounting experience in manufacturing, medical device, or another product-based environment.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, cash flow reports, and management reporting.
  • Strong Excel and accounting systems skills, with the ability to improve processes and build reliable information from developing systems.
  • Strong analytical skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate what the numbers mean.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • QuickBooks Enterprise experience.
  • Controller, plant controller, accounting manager, senior accountant, or similar hands-on accounting leadership experience in a small or mid-sized manufacturing organization.
  • CPA, CMA, or other relevant professional credential.
  • Experience in regulated manufacturing, medical device, or ISO-controlled environments.
READY TO MAKE AN IMPACT?

If you are a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys building strong processes, improving financial visibility, and working closely with an entrepreneurial team, we would like to hear from you.
