Job description

Position: Controller

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Compensation: $170,000–$180,000 Base DOE + 20% Bonus + Future Equity

Work Type: Onsite (occasional flexibility)

The Kostelic Agency is conducting a search for an experienced Controller to join a rapidly growing, multi-state organization headquartered in Phoenix.

This is a highly visible leadership opportunity responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations across a complex, multi-entity organization. Reporting directly to executive leadership, you'll lead a talented accounting team while helping scale the finance organization through continued organic growth and acquisitions.

The organization has grown from approximately $300M in annual revenue and is on pace to exceed $400M, fueled by continued expansion into new markets and strategic acquisitions.

This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys building teams, improving processes, partnering with Operations, and driving operational excellence in a fast-paced environment.

Scope & Impact

  • Lead all monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities while ensuring timely, GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
  • Oversee the General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Internal Compliance, and Accounting Systems functions across a multi-entity organization.
  • Direct day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger accounting, inventory accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure the integrity of financial data through strong internal controls, accounting policies, and process standardization.
  • Own technical accounting areas including ASC 842 lease accounting, fixed assets, and consolidated financial reporting.
  • Lead annual external audits and serve as the primary liaison with independent auditors.
  • Support mergers and acquisitions, including purchase accounting and post-acquisition integrations.
  • Drive ERP implementations, system enhancements, and accounting process improvements that support continued scalability.
  • Partner closely with Operations and executive leadership to improve reporting, strengthen business processes, and support strategic initiatives.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting organization.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required (CPA &/or MBA a plus).
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years leading an accounting function as a Controller or comparable leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, technical accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience leading full-cycle accounting operations and preparing consolidated financial statements.
  • Proven leadership overseeing General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Internal Compliance, and month-end close.
  • Hands-on experience with ASC 842 lease accounting, internal controls, reconciliations, and external audits.
  • Experience supporting ERP implementations or major system conversions.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with strong analytical and reporting capabilities.
  • Experience within multi-entity organizations; private equity and M&A experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and/or ServiceTitan is highly desirable.

The Ideal Leader

This organization is looking for a true working Controller—someone who leads from the front, isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves, and naturally takes ownership.

Success in this role will come from balancing strong technical accounting expertise with exceptional leadership, cross-functional partnership, and a continuous improvement mindset. The ideal candidate thrives in high-growth environments, develops high-performing teams, and enjoys building scalable accounting processes that support a rapidly expanding business.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Organization projected to grow from approximately $300M to more than $400M in annual revenue.
  • Operations spanning multiple entities and 23 states, with continued national expansion.
  • Named to the Inc. 5000 list of America's Fastest-Growing Private Companies multiple times.
  • Significant visibility with executive leadership and the opportunity to influence company-wide initiatives.
  • Lead a broad accounting organization while helping shape the next phase of growth.
  • Long-term runway for advancement as the company continues to scale through both organic growth and acquisitions.
