What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Job description

Controller

Remote , based in NY, NJ

$175,000-$200,000

Overview

A rapidly growing healthcare services organization is seeking an Assistant Controller to join its finance leadership team.

This is an ideal opportunity for a highly motivated accounting professional who is ready to take the next step in their career and grow into a Controller role over time.

The organization operates across multiple states and manages a complex multi-entity structure. The Assistant Controller will work directly alongside senior finance leadership, gaining exposure to strategic financial operations, process improvement initiatives, reporting, and team leadership.

This role is not for someone looking to simply complete assigned tasks. The ideal candidate is naturally curious, takes ownership, seeks out opportunities to improve processes, and wants to build a long-term career in finance leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Support the Controller/CFO in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations

Assist with month-end and year-end close processes

Prepare and review reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reports

Support multi-entity accounting, consolidations, and financial reporting

Analyze financial data and identify opportunities for process improvement

Partner with operational teams to improve reporting accuracy and financial visibility

Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis projects

Help strengthen accounting controls, documentation, and procedures

Work closely with accounting, AR, collections, and offshore support teams

Participate in special projects and operational improvement initiatives

Take increasing ownership of accounting functions with a clear path toward future Controller responsibilities

Ideal Candidate

Strong accounting foundation with the ability to grow into a leadership role

CPA or accounting background strongly preferred

Healthcare experience a plus, particularly organizations involving insurance billing or complex revenue recognition

Experience with multi-entity accounting environments preferred

Strong Excel and financial analysis skills

Highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to learn

Ownership mentality—looks for ways to improve processes rather than simply completing assigned tasks

Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment

Strong communication skills and ability to work across departments

Desire to build a long-term career path toward Controller-level leadership
