The Role

The Assistant Controller plays a critical leadership role within Hermanson's Finance team, supporting the Controller in maintaining accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and effective accounting operations.

This role partners closely with accounting, payroll, project accounting, and operations to ensure financial integrity across job costing, WIP reporting, and month-end close processes. The Assistant Controller also serves as a key escalation point for accounting issues, process improvements, and system integrity within D365 F&O.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Review balance sheet accounts, including cash, WIP, AR, and AP for reasonableness.
  • Assist in preparation of internal and external financial reporting.
  • Maintain and enforce internal control structures to ensure accurate and compliant financial operations.
  • Review and approve key transactions, including payments, ACH, and wire activity.
  • Ensure segregation of duties and adherence to approval workflows across accounting functions.
  • Support audit requests and provide documentation for internal and external auditors.
  • Oversee job cost accounting processes, including WIP, revenue recognition, and cost allocation.
  • Partner with Project Accountants and Operations to investigate cost variances, margin fluctuations, and job anomalies.
  • Validate cost transfers, forecasting (ECAC), and revenue alignment.
  • Manage and mentor payroll and accounts payable teams, ensuring accurate, timely processing and adherence to internal controls and compliance standards.Oversee end-to-end payroll and AP operations, driving process improvements, efficiency, and cross-functional alignment across finance.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls, ensuring data integrity and compliance with all regulatory and company requirements.
  • Monitor financial data integrity within D365 F&O and related systems.
  • Identify and resolve system or process breakdowns impacting financial reporting.
  • Support implementation of system improvements, reporting enhancements, and integrations.
  • Oversee and manage complex multi-state/national payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance with varying tax regulations, and timely processing across all jurisdictions.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight to accounting team members.
  • Review work product across accounting functions (AP, payroll, GL, project accounting).
  • Act as backup to the Controller and serve as a point of escalation for urgent business issues.
  • Promote cross-functional alignment between Finance, Payroll, and Operations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Support finance transformation initiatives, including reporting enhancements and workflow improvements.
  • Assist in developing scalable processes as the business grows.

The salary range for this position is $130,000.00 to $145,000.00. (The compensation offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills and experience).

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5-8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and financial analysis
  • Proficiency in Excel and ERP systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-state payroll, with strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations and compliance requirements
  • Proven, hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (ERP/accounting system) is required, including use in financial reporting, general ledger management, and/or project-based accounting environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with ADP payroll systems is required, including payroll processing, reporting, reconciliation, and compliance support.
  • Ability to utilize ERP and payroll systems to maintain accurate financial records, support month-end close, and ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.
  • Experience supporting or improving accounting systems, processes, and internal controls through.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
