We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our leadership team and oversee all aspects of the company's accounting and financial operations.The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with extensive construction accounting experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to accuracy, integrity, and continuous improvement.

Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for directing all accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, internal controls, and compliance activities for the company. This position partners closely with executive leadership to provide financial insight that supports strategic decision-making while ensuring the integrity of the company's financial records.

This is a full-time, in-office position based in Kent, Washington. We believe close collaboration between accounting, operations, and executive leadership is essential to our success, and this role is expected to be on-site each business day.

The Controller will supervise accounting personnel and oversee accounting functions related to heavy civil construction, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, equipment accounting, payroll, and contract accounting.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Manage construction job costing and ensure accurate project cost reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognition.
  • Monitor project profitability and provide financial analysis to executive leadership.
  • Develop and maintain annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Oversee banking relationships, financing activities, and treasury management.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits and tax preparation with outside CPA firms.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal accounting controls and financial policies.
  • Oversee payroll processes, including prevailing wage, certified payroll, union reporting, and benefit contributions.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, automation, and operational efficiencies.
  • Prepare financial reports and analyses for ownership and executive leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant construction accounting experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting leadership or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting principles.
  • Extensive experience with:
    • Job costing
    • Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
    • Percentage-of-completion accounting
    • Construction contracts
    • Cash flow management
    • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Experience with accounting software in a construction environment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license.
