It typically requires extensive experience, advanced accounting skills, and often a CPA certification, making it a high-level role in finance. Controllers usually report to the CFO and play a key part in strategic financial planning.

Why do controllers make so much money?

Controllers typically earn high salaries because they hold a senior financial management role responsible for overseeing accounting operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing strategic financial insights. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, usually backed by a degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, advanced Excel skills, and financial management software is essential. Outstanding analytical thinking, attention to detail, and leadership are crucial soft skills for managing teams and making strategic decisions. These abilities are vital for ensuring accurate financial oversight, supporting business objectives, and maintaining organizational integrity.

What are some typical career advancement paths for controllers within an organization?

Controllers who develop strong cross-functional relationships and stay current with industry regulations and technology trends are well-positioned for upward mobility. Many organizations also offer professional development programs and mentorship to support career growth.
