Job description

Position Summary: A growing mid-Atlantic construction company with headquarters in Harford County, MD is seeking an experienced Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations. This individual will play a critical leadership role in managing financial reporting, job costing, budgeting, cash flow, and operational accounting processes across multiple projects and business units.

The ideal candidate will bring strong construction accounting experience, hands-on leadership, and the ability to provide strategic financial insight to support continued company growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end close
  • Manage job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project financial reporting
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP standards, covenants, and internal controls
  • Coordinate annual audits and work directly with external CPA firms and banking partners
  • Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency
  • Monitor project costs, labor reporting, subcontractor expenses, and contract billing
  • Develop and improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and financial processes
  • Partner closely with operational leadership to support strategic decision-making
  • Supervise and mentor accounting and payroll staff


    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of accounting/finance experience with at least 3 years in the construction industry
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting principles including WIP reporting and job costing
  • Construction contract management and billing preferred
  • Financial modeling and operational analysis preferred.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting software such as Sage, Foundation, Viewpoint, or similar systems
  • CPA preferred but not require
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
