Job description

O'Neal Steel is currently seeking a Inventory and Cost Accountant Sr. at our Corporate office in Birmingham, AL.

Responsible for reconciling inventory-related balance sheet accounts to the general ledger,analyzing item cost and work order variances, and identifying and resolving root causes of inventory cost errors. This role partners closely with other departments to ensure inventory valuation accuracy and supports FP&A with analysis of other income statement variances. Assists the Assistant Controller with month-end close and special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities Include but Are Not Limited To:

  • Reconcile inventory accounts (cardex to on-hand, WIP, in-transit, and other inventory related accounts) to the general ledger monthly and record any necessary journal entries.
  • Analyze work order and other manufacturing cost variances; investigate non-routine items causing item cost to be incorrect.
  • Identify root causes of items with incorrect cost.
  • Partner with other departments to provide training, implement process
    improvements, or correct item setup issues.
  • Assist FP&A with analysis of income statement variances outside of inventory as needed.
  • Prepare inventory borrowing base files monthly.
  • Provide inventory-related reporting for use in monthly financial statements provided to the parent company.
  • Provide support for internal and external auditors.
  • Provide error-free work products to internal and external customers related to the output of this position.
  • Conduct special projects as requested by the Assistant Controller.

Required Skills, Education and Experience:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, including Word and Outlook.
  • Expert in Microsoft Excel including skills with vlookup, xlookup, and other more complex formulas.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research and identify root causes of variances.
  • Effective communication skills; comfortable partnering cross-functionally.
  • 10-key calculator skills.

Desired Skills, Education and Experience:

  • 4-year bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • 4-7 years of related inventory/cost accounting experience
  • JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Proficiency.
