What does a control systems manager do?

A Control Systems Manager oversees the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated control systems within industrial or manufacturing environments. They manage teams of engineers and technicians to ensure systems operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with industry standards. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting, project management, and coordinating with other departments to improve process automation. Control Systems Managers play a key role in optimizing production processes and reducing downtime through effective system management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a control systems manager?

To thrive as a Control Systems Manager, you need a solid background in electrical or control engineering, experience with automation systems, and often a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial networking protocols, and certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are critical soft skills for managing teams and projects. These competencies ensure reliable system performance, safety, and efficient operations in complex industrial environments.

How does a control systems manager typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Control Systems Manager frequently works alongside engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure automated processes run efficiently and safely. They coordinate with production staff to address system issues, implement upgrades, and align control strategies with operational goals. Effective collaboration is essential, as the manager translates technical requirements between departments and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Regular meetings and cross-disciplinary projects are common, making strong communication and teamwork skills vital for success in this role.

What is the difference between Control Systems Manager vs Control Systems Engineer?

AspectControl Systems ManagerControl Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, management experience, certifications like CSCP or PMPBachelor's or master's in engineering, certifications like CSE or PE
Work EnvironmentOversees teams, manages projects, strategic planningDesigns, develops, tests control systems, hands-on technical work
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, automation, and industrial sectors for leadership rolesCommonly found in automation, robotics, and process control industries

The Control Systems Manager focuses on overseeing control system projects, managing teams, and strategic planning, while the Control Systems Engineer is primarily involved in designing and implementing control systems. Both roles require engineering credentials, but the manager's role emphasizes leadership and coordination, whereas the engineer's role is more technical and hands-on.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of control systems software deployed to American Terawatt's hardware.

  • Work closely with the power systems engineering team to co-design transmission systems and components for Macrogrids and HVDC networks.

  • Develop simulation and physical testing platforms to verify control system performance and robustness before deployment.

Job description

American Terawatt is building a new industrial electric grid for the United States. Our systems stay safe and stable because they run on distributed, fault-tolerant control loops.

We design and deploy advanced power transmission systems, serving large industrial loads, hundreds of megawatts at a time. Our systems deliver electric power to everything from frontier AI datacenters to highly automated manufacturing, refineries, mines, and more.

The backbone of American Terawattโ€™s network is based on long-distance HVDC transmission, anchored by software-defined โ€˜Macrogridsโ€™ which actively manage local transmission between generation, storage, and loads.

The Role

As a control systems software engineer at American Terawatt, you will:

  • Own the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of control systems software deployed to American Terawattโ€™s hardware.

  • Work closely with the power systems engineering team to co-design transmission systems and components to serve both local Macrogrids and the larger HVDC transmission network.

  • Develop simulation and physical testing platforms, to verify performance and robustness of control systems before deployment at scale.

  • Participate in the commissioning of controls software in-situ in real deployments.

  • Develop and maintaining control systems software development pipelines including CI / CD, issue tracking, etc.

Experience

We are hiring across a variety of experience levels for this role. At least 3+ years of commercial engineering experience is required.

Required Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred

  • 3+ years of commercial engineering experience in control systems within aerospace, robotics, EV, power systems, or other safety-critical domains

  • Proficiency in control theory fundamentals: feedback/feedforward control, state estimation, PID tuning, and stability analysis

  • Hands-on experience with real-time embedded control systems development (e.g., C/C++ on RTOS or bare-metal platforms)

  • Experience developing and validating controls using simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or PSCAD

  • Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing methodologies

  • Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, and software development best practices in an embedded or controls context

  • Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills across software, firmware, and hardware boundaries

Preferred Experience
  • Masterโ€™s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Controls, or Power Systems

  • Direct experience with power electronics control (inverters, converters, rectifiers) or HVDC systems

  • Familiarity with grid-forming and grid-following inverter control strategies

  • Experience with communication protocols common in power and industrial systems (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, CAN)

  • Background in fault detection, protection coordination, or fault-tolerant control architectures

  • Experience deploying control systems to field hardware and participating in system commissioning

  • Exposure to power systems modeling, load flow analysis, or transient stability studies

  • Experience with distributed or networked control systems where multiple controllers coordinate autonomously

  • Familiarity with functional safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 62443, or similar)
