Job description

Amazon Leo is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.
Have you ever wanted to develop ground systems and related products for a high-performance satellite constellation? We are looking for a Ground Systems Engineer to participate in the technical definition, development, integration, test, production, and deployment of Leo ground systems. These systems include state of the art full motion tracking antennas, modems, and innovative supporting systems.
Key job responsibilities
- Define, develop, and provide Radio Frequency (RF) technical oversight for integrated terminal products and solutions for gateways and tracking, telemetry, and control systems, working with both internal teams and suppliers.
- Develop solutions to demanding design problems enabling Amazon to fully realize Leo connectivity products.
- Support conducting in-depth design reviews including preparing design review documentation and artifacts, and reviewing design materials.
- Develop RF architecture, specifications, requirements, and designs and perform analyses, prepare documentation, and conduct presentations for parabolic LEO tracking TT&C and Gateway Terminal systems.
- Possess Subject Matter Expertise in developing RF hardware equipment and modem products for integration into Ground Gateway and TT&C terminals.
- Assist development of verification and validation plans and philosophies to ensure our products meet technical, functional, performance, and business requirements across teams and suppliers
- Assist in the development of gateway monitoring and control systems and methodologies, including operational and fault management plans and on-site commissioning methodologies.
- Support identification and analysis of operational faults and performance metrics and trends.
- Perform root cause analysis on highly complex system issues.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
A day in the life
In this role as Sr Ground Systems Engineer, you will be actively engaged in developing Amazon Leo's Ground Gateway terminal products. These products enable mission critical, high throughput communications with Leo satellites. You will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to develop, test, qualify, produce, and globally deploy solutions and products enabling Leo's global network.
About the team
The Ground Systems team is responsible for the architecture, design, build, and installation of Kuiper's Ground and TT&C Gateways. Our Ground Gateways enable high data rate, low latency communications between Kuiper points of presence (PoP) and our Low Earth Orbit Satellite constellation. TT&C Gateways support satellite Launch and Early Orbit enabling command and control of the satellites during this critical phase. The team works closely with the Networks, Regulatory, Payload Test, and RF Hardware teams to ensure Leo provides a seamless customer experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Minimum of 8 years of system engineering experience in development and delivery of satellite communications systems.
- RF systems experience, preferably with ground tracking antennas and systems.
- Experience in RF product design, and/or integration and test as related to antenna systems and their associated ancillary equipment.
- In-depth understanding of satellite communications link budgets.
- Experience supporting Systems Engineering of ground systems development efforts including meeting cost, schedule, and performance goals.
- General computer hardware and software proficiency.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or experience with RF measurement equipment, including: power meters, spectrum analyzers, vector signal generators, network analyzers, oscilloscopes
- Experience in development and operation of full motion ground gateways and/or TT&C systems.
- Experience in writing and managing RF system and subsystem requirements, including definition and traceability.
- Experience in defining and documenting RF hardware and software and interfaces, between systems and subsystems.
- Experience working with external custom product suppliers
- Experience with satellite modems and satellite ground system integration from RF to Network.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in development of LEO/MEO systems.
- Experience in monitoring and controlling operational satellite ground systems, including fault and performance management.
- Experience with satellite communications spectrum monitoring systems and software.
- Experience with analysis and scripting tools such as MATLAB, Python, STK, or Visualyse
- Experience in V-Band and E-Band RF systems.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
