JOB PURPOSE
The Sr Systems Engineer II independently monitors and maintains production systems to ensure reliability and availability. This mid-level position focuses on leading incident response, developing automation solutions, implementing monitoring and observability, and mentoring junior engineers while building expertise in operational practices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
System Operations & Incident Management
  • Independently monitor and troubleshoot production systems, applications, and infrastructure
  • Lead incident response for moderate complexity issues and coordinate resolution efforts
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement preventive measures
  • Manage and participate in on-call rotation providing production support
  • Execute operational tasks including deployments, maintenance windows, and configuration changes

Automation & Monitoring
  • Develop automation scripts to reduce manual toil and improve operational efficiency
  • Configure and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability tools
  • Implement logging and metrics collection for system visibility
  • Create and maintain runbooks and operational documentation
  • Contribute to infrastructure as code and configuration management efforts

Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Mentor junior operations engineers on tools, processes, and best practices
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on system reliability and operational requirements
  • Participate in post-mortems and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Share knowledge through documentation, presentations, and team discussions

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related technical field
  • Equivalent experience (4+ years) may substitute for degree

Experience
  • 4-6 years of professional experience in operations, DevOps, or infrastructure roles
  • Proven track record of independently managing production systems
  • Experience with incident management and troubleshooting complex issues
  • Payments, financial services, or regulated industry experience preferred

Technical Skills
  • Strong proficiency with operating systems (Linux/Unix and Windows)
  • Experience with cloud platforms and infrastructure services
  • Strong scripting and automation skills (Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar)
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools and practices
  • Understanding of networking concepts and troubleshooting (TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing)
