Overview

TEC Systems Group is looking for a Senior Design Engineer โ€“ Controls & Automation (Fundamentals of Engineering, FE) to lead and expand our design team. This role requires a strong background in control system design, automation integration, and industry compliance, as well as proven leadership experience in managing design teams and mentoring engineers.

As a key technical leader, you will be responsible for developing and implementing control automation solutions, collaborating with clients and project teams, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. In addition to leading a small design team, you will play a pivotal role in scaling and developing the team over time to support company growth.

Essential Functions
  • Lead and manage a small design team, with the goal of expanding the team as the company grows.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of interdepartmental policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Design integrated automation solutions that align with client needs, safety requirements, and industry standards.
  • Develop control system designs, including hardware specifications, software integration, and commissioning.
  • Provides and/or coordinates training, technical guidance, and instruction to personnel within the department.
  • Collaborate with clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure successful project execution and alignment with overall objectives.
  • Create engineering documentation such as P&IDs, industrial control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and network architecture.
  • Implement innovative and practical solutions to resolve complex design challenges in control automation projects.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and project proposals for clients and stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate records of project hours, tasks, and deliverables to ensure efficiency and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices in automation and control systems.
  • Assist in procuring automation components and stay updated on emerging technologies.
Qualifications / Skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, PLC & HMI programming, SCADA systems, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with specific PLC platforms such as Rockwell.
  • Familiarity with NFPA, NEC, UL, and other relevant industry standards.
  • Experience in designing and specifying industrial control panels, motor control centers, and safety systems.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to drive projects and team performance.
  • Ability to communicate verbally in one-on-one situations with management and co-workers; must be able to accept constructive criticism.
  • Must be able to multitask and complete assignments on time.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in project requirements and be open to learning new drafting software and techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to implement creative and effective design solutions.
  • Attention to detail in creating and reviewing electrical designs and drawings, ensuring all specifications are followed and discrepancies are promptly identified and corrected.
Education / Experience
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a leadership or management role
  • Experience in drafting and control system design required
  • Proven ability to lead and develop engineering teams
  • Experience in P&ID development preferred
  • Familiarity with UL508a certification process preferred
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university preferred
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) occasionally
  • Must be able to sit or stand continuously, sometimes up to several hours at a time
  • Must be able to walk on uneven ground and long distances (up to 1 mile) to accomplish tasks
  • Must be able to push, pull, reach, bend, squat, crawl, kneel and climb occasionally
  • Must be able to occasionally tolerate challenging internal/external environmental conditions, including but not limited to: extreme heat, extreme cold, wind and humidity
  • Must be able to wear PPE as required
  • Must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned, read technical diagrams and schematics and distinguish colors
  • Must have the hearing acuity to hear alerts, alarms and communication from customers and team members
  • Must be able and willing to travel by car or plane to job sites as needed
