What does a control systems engineer intern do?

A Control Systems Engineer Intern assists in designing, developing, and testing systems that automate and control processes in industries such as manufacturing, energy, or robotics. They often work under the supervision of experienced engineers to create and optimize control algorithms, configure hardware, and troubleshoot system issues. The internship typically involves hands-on experience with software tools, control equipment, and real-world projects, allowing interns to apply theoretical knowledge from their studies. This role helps interns gain valuable practical skills and a deeper understanding of how control systems are engineered and maintained.

What types of projects can a control systems engineer intern expect to work on, and how do these experiences support long-term career growth?

As a Control Systems Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in projects such as designing, testing, and implementing automation solutions, developing control algorithms, or supporting process optimization initiatives. These projects often involve collaborating with senior engineers, software developers, and maintenance teams, giving you exposure to real-world challenges and the opportunity to develop technical and problem-solving skills. By participating in hands-on tasks and cross-functional teamwork, you lay a strong foundation for advancement into roles like Control Systems Engineer or Automation Engineer after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a control systems engineer intern, and why are they important?

To excel as a Control Systems Engineer Intern, you should have a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, control theory, and basic programming, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, MATLAB/Simulink, and industry-standard simulation tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you contribute to team projects and adapt to fast-paced technical environments. These skills and qualities ensure you can support the design, analysis, and troubleshooting of control systems, which are critical for safe and efficient automation processes.

What is the difference between Control Systems Engineer Intern vs Control Systems Engineer?

AspectControl Systems Engineer InternControl Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering or related programBachelor's or master's degree in engineering, often with relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, supervised, entry-level projectsFull-time professional role, responsible for designing and maintaining control systems
Employer & Industry UsageInternships in manufacturing, automation, aerospace, and related industriesFull-time positions in similar industries, with greater responsibilities

Job description

CHAOS Industries is redefining modern defense with a multi-product portfolio that gives the ultimate advantage-domain dominance. The company's products are powered by Coherent Distributed Networks (CDN), empowering warfighters, commercial air operators, and border protection teams to act faster, adapt rapidly, and stay ahead of evolving threats.ย

CHAOS Industries was founded in 2022 and has raised a total of $1 billion in funding from leading investors, including 8VC, Accel, and Valor Equity Partners. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles, with offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, and London. For more information, please visit www.chaosinc.com.

Role Overview:ย

CHAOS is seeking a skilled Control Systems Engineer to join our hardware engineering team. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain HIL simulation environments that enable full system integration testing of our Effector platforms - bridging the gap between software development and flight hardware. You will work closely with GNC, software, and systems engineers to ensure our vehicles are thoroughly validated before ever leaving the ground.ย

The ideal candidate hasย hands-on experience building and operating HIL or SIL simulation environments for embedded or autonomous systems.ย

This is a full-time, on-site position in El Segundo, CA.ย

ย
Responsibilities:ย

  • Design and develop HIL test benches for full effector system integration, including flight controllers, ESCs, sensors, and ground control systemsย
  • Integrate high-fidelity simulation models (flight dynamics, actuator, and sensor models) that accurately replicate real-world behaviorย
  • Integrate hardware components - including autopilot boards, communication links, power systems, and peripherals - into HIL systemsย
  • Develop automated test suites and regression frameworks toย validateย software and firmware changes against HIL environmentsย
  • Collaborate with software and integration/test engineers to define test plans and acceptance criteria for new features and hardware releasesย
  • Debug complex hardware-software interactions by analyzing HIL test data, logs, and telemetryย
  • Maintain and improve test infrastructure, including simulation software, real-time targets, and data acquisition systemsย
  • Document test methodologies, procedures, and results clearly for cross-functional team useย
  • Support transition of HIL-validated systems to integration and flight test phasesย

Minimumย Requirements:ย

  • Bachelor's degree inย Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.ย
  • 3+ย years of experience in hardware-in-the-loop testing, embedded systems integration, or a closely related disciplineย
  • Hands-on experience building and operating HIL or SIL simulation environments for embedded or autonomous systemsย
  • Proficiencyย in real-time simulation platforms (e.g.,ย dSPACE, NIย VeriStand, or similar)ย
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or C/C++ for test automation and system scriptingย
  • Familiarity with flight controller software such as PX4,ย ArduPilot, or equivalentย
  • Experience with communicationย protocols common in drone systems (MAVLink, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C)ย
  • Solid understanding ofย effectorย system architecture, including propulsion, navigation, and control loopsย
  • Experience with version control systemsย and CI/CD pipelines for automated testingย
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across hardware and software domainsย
  • Ability to obtain andย maintainย a U.S. security clearanceย

Preferred Requirements:ย

  • Master's degree inย Engineeringย
  • Experience with ROS or ROS 2 for simulation and integration testingย
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink for flight dynamics or control system modelingย
  • Exposure to flight test operations and transitioning systems from HIL to field testingย
  • Experience with FPGA firmware development or embedded Linux environmentsย
  • Knowledge of RF systems, GPS signal simulation, or sensor fusion techniquesย
  • FAA Part 107 certification or equivalent UAV operational credentialsย

Why CHAOS?
