Job description

The Newport News Sheriff's Office has an immediate opening for anexperienced,dedicated civilian Control Room Operator position. This position is a overnight position from 11pm-7am. The Sheriff's Office operates two jail facilities housing over 500 inmates.


The Newport News Sheriff's Office Control Room is the "nerve center" of the facility. The Control Operator's have considerable responsibility for maintaining perimeter security, for controlling movement within the facility, for monitoring life-safety systems and for key control. Much of the Control Room Operators time is devoted to the door control function: acknowledging door control intercom calls, making positive identification of the person requesting doors be opened, and opening doors. Operators are responsible for monitoring cameras, coordinating communication between units, and maintaining security of both the Newport News City Jail and Jail Annex.


Performs duties of Control Room Operator as required:


  • Operates facility security doors and devices; monitors prisoner movements and disruptive behaviors; monitors staff movements and behaviors, requests appropriate emergency responses to violent disturbances and emergent medical incidents.
  • Inventory and check all equipment and test control panels at the beginning and end of each shift and Report all missing or damaged equipment immediately.
  • Complete logs and reports before going off duty.
  • Know emergency evacuation procedures for the entire facility.
  • Make positive identification of everyone entering or exiting the building and /or doors within the Newport News City Jail and Jail Annex. Keep all security doors secured at all times unless an authorized passage is being made. Control movement between major areas within the security perimeter.
  • Coordinate and monitor radio communication throughout the facility; Provide coordination for emergency situations; -Monitor smoke and fire detection systems within the facility; Control emergency exit doors.
  • Monitor security inside and outside the facility.
  • All other security duties as assigned.
