Major Duties 

Produces complete instrumentation solutions and electrical Test Systems designs based on customer specifications, and standardized design practices used at ATS Test Systems Inc. Responsible for successful completion of entire projects as part of an assigned project team.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Works with applications engineers to help prepare concepts for Test instrumentation.
  • Works with software department, mechanical designers, suppliers and customers during the design process to design a system that will enable the machine to perform its intended function safely and reliably.
  • Formulates and produces complete electrical design package which includes detailed schematics, I/O lists, panel layouts, bills of materials based on ATS Test Systems standard specifications, and the customers requirements.
  • Specifies all electrical and controls related hardware and software, and produces requisition forms for material purchases.
  • Verifies that electrical design package is complete, accurate and safe based on sound design practices and accepted standards, and that the I/O lists meet program requirements prior to issue to shop floor.
  • Integrates third party equipment and instrumentation. Examples include field i/o using industrial communication protocols, motion control products, transducers, and signal conditioners.
  • Works with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and technicians on the shop floor to solve problems in order to provide the customer with a complete functional system. Responsible for the "Make it work" portion of projects including instrument validation, and machine capability studies.
  • Member of the integration and commissioning team. Assists in final setup, and operator training at the customers facility.
  • Works with other members of the electrical design department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating technology.
  • Provides customers with training specific to their current project.  Ie: Electrical hardware, Machine operation, Programming principles, Program functionality, and Program Structure.
  • Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS code of business conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
Areas for potential growth:

Not all designers become competent in all areas listed here. It is expected that over the course of 3-5 yrs that each test systems electrical designer will learn some of the skills listed below

  • Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) testing,
  • Leak test (Pneumatic, Hydraulic, Helium mass)
  • Mechanical properties test (Strain, force torque)
  • Electrical properties test (Current, Voltage, Quiescent current)
  • Solar panel test
  • Vision system programming/integration. (ATS Smart vision, Cognex)
  • ATS Test standard product dashboard (Automotive) test development
  • PID tuning for Servo, temperature, flow and/or pressure
  • PCB board design
  • PLC programming (AB SLC, AB control logix, Siemens S7, Beckhoff twincatt)
  • ATS Test executive custom script level programming
  • Microprocessor programming and integration including JTAG.
Qualifications

Education:

A post-secondary technology diploma or engineering degree or equivalent, specializing in electronics, electrical or controls technology.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in electrical design, electrical engineering, or industrial automation environments.
  • Experience designing systems incorporating instrumentation for use in measuring part variables for the purpose of product quality.
  • A working knowledge of AutoCAD or Eplan  and the ability to keep abreast of leading-edge instrumentation technology is essential.
  • Good verbal communication skills. Able to deal with customers and other personnel.
  • Able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Willing to work overtime
  • Willing to travel, this role may require travel up to 20% of the time, including occasional domestic and international travel. Travel assignments may be up to 2-3 weeks in duration.
