What is a contractual Unreal Engine developer?

A Contractual Unreal Engine Developer is a professional hired on a temporary or project-based contract to design, develop, and optimize interactive experiences using Unreal Engine. This role typically involves creating 3D environments, programming gameplay mechanics, and working closely with artists and designers to bring projects to life. Contractual developers may work remotely or on-site, often for game studios, architectural visualization firms, or companies requiring real-time 3D solutions. Their contracts can range from a few weeks to several months, depending on project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual Unreal Engine developer?

To thrive as a Contractual Unreal Engine Developer, you need strong proficiency in C++ programming, 3D mathematics, and experience with Unreal Engine's Blueprint system, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, Unreal Engine certification, and knowledge of game development pipelines are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help navigate remote or freelance team environments and client expectations. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering high-quality, efficient solutions in a competitive and collaborative project-based setting.

Job description

At Imerza, we are a leading innovator in architectural visualization software, specializing in digital twins and real estate marketing. Our team blends cutting-edge technology with artistic craftsmanship to create immersive, real-time experiences that transform how properties are designed, presented, and sold.

We’re passionate about redefining what’s possible in real-time 3D, and we’re seeking a Senior Unreal Developer to lead technical innovation and elevate the quality, performance, and reliability of our visualization systems.

About the Role:
The Senior Unreal Developer plays a pivotal role in shaping Imerza’s Unreal Engine development pipeline and real-time visualization platform. You’ll lead efforts to build, optimize, and integrate advanced systems that power our architectural and experiential visualization projects.

This position combines technical mastery with leadership — you’ll work alongside engineers, artists, and project leads to define standards, mentor developers, and contribute to our next generation of real-time rendering and simulation systems.

What You’ll Do:
  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced real-time systems in Unreal Engine 5.
  • Build and extend core runtime features including: Interactive cameras and slice-plane systems.
  • Dynamic lighting, time-of-day, and environmental effects.
  • UMG and in-engine tools for interaction and visualization control.
  • Drive large-scale scene optimization using Nanite, Lumen, World Partition, and PCG.
  • Develop reusable Unreal frameworks, documentation, and pipelines to improve efficiency and maintain consistency across teams.
  • Collaborate with engineers, artists, and producers to ensure seamless integration between systems and client-facing deliverables.
  • Troubleshoot performance, rendering, and system-level challenges with efficiency and precision.
  • Mentor mid-level and junior developers, fostering growth in Unreal best practices and creative problem solving.
  • Contribute to technical planning and help define the studio’s Unreal Engine roadmap.

What We’re Looking For:
  • 6+ years of professional experience developing in Unreal Engine (UE5 preferred).
  • Expert knowledge of C++ and Blueprints, Unreal Editor tools, and runtime system architecture.
  • Proven experience creating interactive features, procedural tools, and scalable systems.
  • Deep understanding of large environment workflows, dynamic lighting, and real-time rendering optimization.
  • Familiarity with Perforce, Git, or equivalent version control tools.
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
  • A proactive, collaborative leader with a track record of mentoring or leading technical teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging abilities across multidisciplinary projects.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with VR/XR systems or virtual production pipelines (nDisplay, LED walls).
  • Knowledge of Unreal networking/replication or database integration (MySQL).
  • Experience with Datasmith, CAD data, or architectural visualization workflows.
  • Familiarity with automation, Python, or build systems for Unreal projects.
  • Understanding of projection mapping or real-time performance environments.
Additional Requirements:
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • This position is based in Sarasota, FL. Candidates who can work onsite or relocate are preferred.
  • Exceptional remote candidates within the U.S. will also be considered.
