Job description

JOB TITLE: Registered Nurse – Stress Lab

DEPARTMENT: Cardiopulmonary

REPORTS TO: Cardiopulmonary Director

JOB SUMMARY

Provides nursing care to cardiovascular patients in the Stress Lab. Attends required in-service, yearly education day and mandatory departmental meetings. Participates in the collection of data for QI. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies. Practices good communication between departments, with physicians, each other and the Department Director.
 The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Current Wyoming Registered Nurse License, Bachelor of Nursing preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Previous Stress Testing experience preferred. Minimum of one to two years in Critical Care or Emergency Department or three years of clinical nursing in a medical or surgical telemetry unit.

SKILLS

Knowledge of, Critical Care nursing principles and the nursing process. Perform effectively in stressful situations. Use effective communication skills. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

BLS and ACLS required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Stress test scheduling coordination with radiology.
  • Stress test monitoring per protocols.
  • Recognize cardiac arrhythmias and intervene per provider orders, protocol or ACLS.
  • IV/Port access for stress test patients as well as assistance in radiology and laboratory as needed.
  • Midline team member.
  • Operate equipment: IV pump, Stress testing equipment (treadmill & monitoring system).
  • Prepare, monitor and administer medications during a stress test procedure.
  • Assess the patient’s learning needs. Educate the patient and family regarding stress test.
  • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Maintain accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient history, condition, vital signs, treatment, response to intervention, and change of status.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Follow the standard for infection control; hand washing, protective eyewear, mask, gown, gloves, head cover, and shoe cover, as appropriate.  Proper disposal of contaminated items and the use of isolation.
  • Participate in monthly outdating of medications and supplies and checking of crash cart. Check, order and stock supplies according to par level.
  • Enter orders into the computer.
  • Participate in chart review.  Collects data for QI.
  • Attend mandatory yearly education day, monthly mandatory staff meetings, and mandatory in-service.
  • Enhance professional growth by attending educational opportunities pertaining to Cardiology.
  • Initiate and coordinate a Code Blue.
  • Behave in a professional manner and maintain good interpersonal relationships with other staff, departments, manager, and physicians.
  • Participate in orientation of new Stress Lab staff. Provide nursing students with opportunities to observe, and learn.
  • Ensure all work areas are kept clean, stocked, and ready for use.
  • Work with other departments in coordinating smooth transfer of patients.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
