What is the difference between Contractual Cae Nvh Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectContractual Cae Nvh EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering, CAE certificationsBachelor's/Master's in Mechanical Engineering, CAD certifications
Work EnvironmentAutomotive/Manufacturing industry, project-based, testing labsDesign studios, R&D departments, manufacturing facilities
Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, engineering consultanciesAutomotive, aerospace, consumer products, industrial machinery

The Contractual Cae Nvh Engineer focuses on NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) analysis using CAE tools to optimize vehicle comfort, often working on specific projects for clients. In contrast, a Mechanical Design Engineer primarily develops and drafts mechanical components and systems, emphasizing design and functionality. While both roles require mechanical engineering credentials, their work environments and core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual CAE NVH engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contractual CAE NVH Engineer, you generally need a strong background in mechanical engineering, acoustics, and vibration analysis, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in CAE tools such as ANSYS, HyperMesh, and NVH-specific software like LMS Virtual.Lab or Abaqus, along with knowledge of automotive standards, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for interpreting simulation results and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate NVH predictions, efficient problem-solving, and successful integration of solutions in automotive design projects.

What are some common challenges faced by a contractual CAE NVH engineer when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

As a Contractual CAE NVH Engineer, managing multiple projects often means juggling diverse simulation requirements, varying timelines, and coordinating with different teams across departments. One common challenge is ensuring consistent quality and accuracy in simulation results, especially when switching between projects with different NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) targets. Effective time management and clear communication with project managers and design engineers are crucial to stay aligned with changing priorities and deliverables. Adapting quickly to different simulation tools and methodologies also helps in maintaining productivity and meeting client expectations within tight deadlines.

What is a contractual CAE NVH engineer?

Contractual CAE NVH Engineers are professionals who specialize in using Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tools to analyze and improve Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) characteristics in products, typically within the automotive or aerospace industries. They work on a contract basis, meaning they are hired for specific projects or time periods rather than as permanent employees. Their responsibilities include running simulations, interpreting data, and recommending design changes to minimize unwanted noise and vibrations in vehicles or machinery.

Job description

The Senior Vehicle CAE NVH Engineer will be working with CAE tools to lead and guide the design. The Senior Vehicle CAE NVH Engineer will be responsible for assessing NVH performance of BIW/Trimmed Body and full vehicle using ANSA / Optistruct / Hypermesh or similar tools. This candidate will be using pre-processing tools like ANSA/HYPERMESH to create and debug the full vehicle NVH models. The Senior Vehicle CAE NVH Engineer will suggest recommendations for improving the design. This senior engineer can understand the problem by digging into and analyzing the results and is able to find an optimized solution by performing several simulation iterations. The Senior CAE NVH Engineer is involved in component and vehicle testing too and will correlate the CAE results with the test data. The Senior NVH Engineer is responsible for applying advanced methods like DOE/DFSS to optimize the design. This senior engineer will create reports to present the results of the simulations and the achieved improvements. The senior engineer will communicate with the design team, manufacturing team, and suppliers to achieve the desired vehicle performance.
What you bring to the Team
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited or equivalent program.
  • Master's degree or PHD is preferred.
  • 8 + years of automotive structures CAE experience, with 6+ years of direct experience in performing full vehicle NVH CAE analysis
  • Extensive NVH problem solving experience in full vehicle, trimmed body using source-path-receiver thinking for structure borne (Vibration, noise) + airborne noise
  • Experience with using Opti struct/NASTRAN, ANSA and HYPERWORKS
  • Experience with setting modal targets (modal map), isolation strategy, VTF, NTF analysis & target setting
  • Experience with NVH vehicle benchmarking and target cascading full vehicle to subsystems & component level
  • Experience with correlation of CAE and Test results
  • Hands on experience with optimization tools and techniques using Optistruct
  • Knowledge of applying engineering fundaments in product development
