Instrumentation & Measurement Subject Matter Expert (SME)


Position Overview


We are seeking a highly skilled Instrumentation & Measurement Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support refinery and renewable fuels operations. This role serves as the technical authority for process instrumentation, measurement systems, analyzers, and control device performance across the facility.

The successful candidate will drive reliability improvements, ensure measurement accuracy, support capital project execution, and lead troubleshooting and optimization efforts to enhance operational performance, safety, and efficiency.


Key Responsibilities


  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert for instrumentation, analyzers, and measurement systems.
  • Provide expert guidance on the selection, specification, calibration, maintenance, and lifecycle management of process instrumentation.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex instrumentation and measurement issues impacting safety, reliability, and production.
  • Conduct root cause analyses of instrumentation failures and develop effective corrective actions.
  • Support capital projects by developing instrumentation scopes, participating in design reviews, and supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
  • Develop and maintain instrumentation standards, best practices, and lifecycle management strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry codes and standards, including API, ISA, NFPA, and NEC.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to technicians, engineers, and operations personnel.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline. Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in refinery, petrochemical, renewable fuels, or similar process manufacturing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of process instrumentation, including flow, pressure, temperature, level, and analytical measurement systems.
  • Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
  • Working knowledge of ISA, API, ASME, and NEC standards.


Preferred Qualifications


  • ISA certifications such as Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or Certified Automation Professional (CAP).
  • Experience supporting renewable fuels, hydrogen, or hydroprocessing facilities.
  • Experience integrating instrumentation with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Advanced Process Control (APC) systems.
  • Experience supporting capital projects from Front-End Loading (FEL) through commissioning and startup.
