Job description

A. Morton Thomas & Associates, Inc. (AMT, Inc.) is hiring a Construction Inspectorย in the Transportation sector to support projects throughout the DDOT. As part of this team, you will be immersed in a culture reflective of a smaller firm while providing the resources and technical strength of a larger company. The Construction Inspector will perform field inspection and documentation of construction activities on DDOT infrastructure projects, enduring all work is completed in accordance with contract plans, specifications, and applicable standards.

Working under the direction of the Resident Engineer / Construction Manager, the CI is responsible for daily field observation, quantity tracking, documentation, and quality verification, serving as DDOT's frontline presence on the project.

Interested applicants must possess a valid driverโ€™s license, be available for night work, OT and/or weekends as needed, capable of working independently and within a team, and subject to background check.ย  Applicants preferred to have experience with paving, roadway and bridge construction inspection and records keeping.

Responsibilities

Field Inspection & Oversight

Inspect contractor operations to ensure compliance with: Contract plans and specifications and DDOT standards/procedures
Observe construction activities including:
Roadway reconstruction (paving, curb/gutter, sidewalks)
Bridge work (structural elements, drainage, lighting)
Utility installation and relocation
Monitor maintenance of traffic (MOT) and work zone safety compliance

Documentation & Reporting

Prepare daily Inspector Daily Reports (IDRs) documenting:
Work performed
Labor, equipment, and materials
Weather and site conditions
Maintain detailed inspection records using DDOT-required systems
Report field issues, discrepancies, and non-compliant work to RE/CM
Assist in maintaining complete project documentation for audits

Quantity Tracking & Payment Support

Measure and record quantities of installed work on a daily basis
Verify contractor-reported quantities
Support preparation of pay estimates by providing accurate field data

Quality Assurance

Observe and verify materials, installation methods, and workmanship
Ensure testing is performed per specifications
Identify and document deficient or non-conforming work
Recommend acceptance or rejection of work to the Resident Engineer

Coordination & Communication

Coordinate daily with:
Contractor superintendents and crews
Resident Engineer / Construction Manager
Communicate field conditions, conflicts, and progress updates
Assist with resolution of minor field issues

Safety Monitoring

Observe contractor compliance with safety requirements
Identify unsafe conditions and report immediately
Support enforcement of safe work practices in active work zones

Typical Project Experience

Construction Inspectors will support projects such as:

Urban roadway reconstruction with phased MOT
Bridge demolition and reconstruction
Utility trenching, drainage systems, and lighting installation
Streetscape improvements (sidewalks, ADA ramps, signage)
Work in constrained right-of-way and high-traffic corridors

Qaulifications

High school diploma required; Associateโ€™s or Bachelorโ€™s degree preferred
Minimum 2โ€“5 years of construction inspection experience on roadway and/or bridge projects
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
Experience with field documentation and reporting

Preferred Qualifications

Experience on DDOT, SHA, or other DOT projects
Certifications such as:
NICET (Highway Construction or Transportation)
OSHA 10
Traffic Control / MOT certification
Erosion & Sediment Control certification

Familiarity with:

AASHTO and MUTCD standards
DDOT Construction Management Manual

Technical Skills

Field documentation systems (e.g., Field Manager or similar)
Basic quantity tracking and measurement
Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
Ability to maintain organized project records

Work Environment

100% field-based role
Work in active construction zones, traffic environments, and varying weather conditions
Night work and weekend shifts may be required depending on project phasing
