Job Type: Contract
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid — 2–3 days/week onsite)

We’re partnering with a major financial technology company to hire a Software Engineer II for a trust & safety engineering team focused on high-risk interactions — protecting customer accounts from account takeover (ATO) and other fraud. The team sits at the center of how the company decides, in real time, whether a customer’s behavior looks risky enough to warrant additional verification.

This isn’t a generic backend-Java opening, and it isn’t a pure rules-writing role either; instead, it splits between the two: translating fraud, risk, and policy requirements into precise, testable decision logic, and building the backend services that run it in production.

What You’ll Do

  • Author, maintain, and tune fraud rules and policies across real-time fraud-decisioning engines to protect customer accounts from account takeover and other fraud.

  • Translate requirements from Policy, Risk, and Analytics partners into precise, testable rule logic — tuning thresholds, fraud signals, and link-analysis weights to raise catch precision while reducing friction for legitimate customers.

  • Design and implement features, API changes, and integrations across the backend services that support the fraud-prevention stack — not just the rules layer.

  • Use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar) as a core part of your workflow to accelerate rule authoring and service development, always with human review and testing.

  • Test changes end-to-end before release, including shadow/silent-mode validation and managed production rollouts.

  • Contribute to engineering quality across the stack: design docs, code reviews, automated tests, CI/CD, and observability.

  • Support monitoring, on-call, and rapid issue resolution using observability dashboards to track service health, rule performance, and latency.

  • Collaborate closely with Policy, Analytics, Data Science, and Product partners to respond to emerging fraud attacks.

Required Qualifications

  • 2–3+ years of professional software engineering experience building backend services.

  • Proficiency in a server-side language, especially Java; Python or Node.js also valuable.

  • Experience translating business, policy, fraud, risk, or compliance requirements into executable rules or code.

  • Solid experience with RESTful API design and a server framework such as Spring MVC, Express, or Django.

  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL database technologies.

  • Hands-on experience contributing to a production service — production-quality code and tests, deployment, and on-call.

  • Proficiency with AI coding tools and the judgment to use them effectively while validating their output.

  • Solid grasp of Agile development, object-oriented design, and engineering best practices.

  • Willing to work onsite 2–3 days per week.
