Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Pathology Assistant to join the Pathology Department at Woodhull Medical Center. Under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician specializing in anatomic pathology, the Pathology Assistant will process, examine, document, and prepare surgical and postmortem specimens for pathological evaluation.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of acute-care Pathology Assistant experience, with demonstrated expertise in grossing surgical specimens and performing autopsies. The position requires a valid and current New York State Pathologistsโ€™ Assistant license and registration issued by NYSED, along with a Bachelor's Degree.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and gross tissue specimens for pathology examination, including describing gross anatomical features, dissecting specimens, cutting tissue sections, and preparing specimens for histologic processing, frozen section, biobanking, and other analyses.
  • Perform gross examination of surgical specimens according to established pathology protocols and physician direction.
  • Perform human postmortem examinations/autopsies, including external examination, dissection, and selection of tissues and fluids for further examination.
  • Gather, document, and maintain information required for accurate and complete autopsy reports.
  • Participate in specimen accessioning, identification, labeling, storage, and disposal according to established procedures.
  • Photograph surgical specimens when assigned and maintain required quality standards for pathology specimen photography.
  • Prepare, maintain, and monitor reagents, supplies, instruments, and laboratory equipment.
  • Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, clean, and disinfect laboratory and pathology equipment.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, forms, reports, and other required documentation.
  • Analyze pathology-related data and prepare reports of findings as directed.
  • Maintain appropriate laboratory inventory and ensure adequate availability of supplies and equipment.
  • Follow all gross room procedures, protocols, techniques, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain laboratory safety and follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of pathological specimens and materials.
  • Promote efficient utilization of laboratory resources while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and patient care.
  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, laboratory personnel, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience specifically in an acute-care setting.
  • Demonstrated experience grossing surgical specimens.
  • Demonstrated experience performing autopsies/postmortem examinations.
  • Strong knowledge of specimen processing and anatomic pathology procedures.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while following the direction of licensed pathologists and established laboratory protocols.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with laboratory safety and infection prevention standards.
