Contract Software Engineer Remote information

What does a contract software engineer remote do?

A remote contract software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications while working remotely, often on a project or time-limited basis. They are typically hired by companies for specific projects or to fill temporary skill gaps, and their work is governed by a contract that outlines the duration, deliverables, and payment terms. These engineers collaborate with teams using online tools, and their responsibilities can include coding, debugging, and participating in virtual meetings to ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract software engineer remote?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineer (Remote), you need strong programming skills, experience with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and collaboration tools such as Jira or Slack is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote work success. These competencies ensure high-quality, timely deliverables and effective remote collaboration across distributed teams.

How do contract software engineers typically integrate with remote development teams?

As a contract software engineer working remotely, you'll often be onboarded quickly and expected to familiarize yourself with the team's tools, workflows, and codebase in a short time. Communication is key—most teams rely on daily stand-ups, regular check-ins, and collaborative platforms like Slack, Jira, or GitHub to keep everyone aligned. You'll likely work alongside full-time engineers, product managers, and designers, contributing to specific projects or milestones with clear deliverables. Proactivity in asking questions and sharing updates helps build trust and ensures smooth collaboration, even when working from different locations and time zones.

How much does a contract software engineer make?

A contract software engineer's pay varies based on experience, location, and project scope, but typically ranges from $50 to $150 per hour. Senior or specialized engineers with in-demand skills like cloud computing or cybersecurity can earn higher rates, especially for remote work with flexible schedules.

We empower leaders to execute their strategies, align their teams, and achieve their goals with confidence. Our commitment to innovation and the success of our customers drives everything we do.

About this Role

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Full Stack Software Engineer to join our Engineering team. You will build the tools that public agencies and local governments rely on to run transparently, execute big plans, and build thriving communities. You are self-sufficient and also thrive in collaborative environments, have strong communication skills, and enjoy working across the entire technology stack. This role is expected to work PST business hours along with the rest of the team.

If you enjoy solving meaningful, real-world problems alongside a supportive team and want a role where your technical input genuinely shapes the product, we would love to meet you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end delivery to design, build, test, and ship features across the full stack, from front-end user interfaces to backend services.
  • Contribute to technical design discussions, architectural decisions, and continuous improvement initiatives (eg. codebase/technical improvements)
  • Apply best practices to software development, combining strong testing discipline with impactful code reviews that ensure codebase quality, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Leverage AI-powered coding tools and workflows to accelerate development.
  • Support continuous deployment and monitoring of production systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across various departments to support business needs, partnering closely with Product Management to define, design, and implement new user features.
  • Contribute to a culture of shared technical knowledge across the engineering team.
  • Write clear, thorough, and accessible technical documentation for systems, workflows, and code changes.
Core Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 4+ years of professional full-stack experience building and maintaining web applications.
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns and clean architecture principles.
  • Strong frontend experience building responsive web applications using React.
  • Solid backend experience implementing server-side code, managing data models/databases (SQL and/or NoSQL), and building APIs (GraphQL and REST).
  • Experience using AI developer tools and agentic workflows (eg. Copilot, Claude, or Cursor) with strong prompting skills to optimize daily workflows and engineering efficiency.
  • Understanding of automated testing frameworks, cloud platforms, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
Bonus Points
  • Experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails is highly desirable, but not required if you can adapt to our backend stack quickly.
  • Experience with AWS, Heroku, DevOps concepts.
  • Experience with civic technology, public sector software, or strategic planning and performance management platforms.
  • Experience building accessible web applications.
  • Experience working in a distributed, remote team environment.
