What does a contract software engineer remote do?

A remote contract software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications while working remotely, often on a project or time-limited basis. They are typically hired by companies for specific projects or to fill temporary skill gaps, and their work is governed by a contract that outlines the duration, deliverables, and payment terms. These engineers collaborate with teams using online tools, and their responsibilities can include coding, debugging, and participating in virtual meetings to ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract software engineer remote?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineer (Remote), you need strong programming skills, experience with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and collaboration tools such as Jira or Slack is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote work success. These competencies ensure high-quality, timely deliverables and effective remote collaboration across distributed teams.

How do contract software engineers typically integrate with remote development teams?

As a contract software engineer working remotely, you'll often be onboarded quickly and expected to familiarize yourself with the team's tools, workflows, and codebase in a short time. Communication is key—most teams rely on daily stand-ups, regular check-ins, and collaborative platforms like Slack, Jira, or GitHub to keep everyone aligned. You'll likely work alongside full-time engineers, product managers, and designers, contributing to specific projects or milestones with clear deliverables. Proactivity in asking questions and sharing updates helps build trust and ensures smooth collaboration, even when working from different locations and time zones.

How much does a contract software engineer make?

A contract software engineer's pay varies based on experience, location, and project scope, but typically ranges from $50 to $150 per hour. Senior or specialized engineers with in-demand skills like cloud computing or cybersecurity can earn higher rates, especially for remote work with flexible schedules.

Job description

Role Summary

Nuuly is searching for a Senior AI Engineer to help build and evolve the AI-powered development harness our Product, UX, and Engineering teams use to move from initiative through design and into implementation. This role owns the harness spanning product definition, UX, design, coding and testing-the skills, templates, schemas, and gate logic that keep AI-assisted work traceable, consistent, and reliable as it hands off between teams and into engineering.

You'll design and maintain the agent instructions, validators, and lifecycle rules that power this system, partner with an AI Enablement Lead and engineering stakeholders on shared standards, and help the harness improve itself over time through structured feedback and output scoring. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who wants to build the tooling and process infrastructure behind applied AI, not just use AI coding assistants day to day.

Role Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain the artifact lifecycle system that governs how work moves between AI-assisted stages
  • Design schemas and traceability standards connecting requirements, use cases, and implementation
  • Author and maintain AI agent instructions and skills - not casual use of AI coding tools, but genuine prompt/agent design
  • Design, build, and deploy AI agents that automate or support steps in the development lifecycle
  • Write automation (Python/Bash) that enforces schema and quality gates across the system
  • Measure and score AI output quality against real usage, and build feedback loops so the system improves over time
  • Partner with Product, UX, and Engineering stakeholders on shared standards and handoffs
Role Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience building production software or internal platforms (APIs, workflow engines, developer tooling, or automation systems)
  • Hands-on experience designing agent instructions, prompt systems, or LLM-backed workflows
  • Experience with spec-driven or artifact-lifecycle systems with AI integrated into the development lifecycle
  • Experience building and deploying AI agents in production, including agent architectures and orchestration patterns
  • Interest in quality discipline: testing, rubrics, evaluation datasets, LLM-as-judge approaches, and observability for AI workflows
  • Experience designing structured data contracts (JSON Schema, YAML, or similar)
  • Comfort partnering with Product, UX, and engineering stakeholders; ability to translate between domain experts and technical constraints
  • Enthusiasm for exploring emerging AI capabilities, platforms, tooling, and techniques
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with an ability to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Familiarity with multiple agentic coding platforms and cloud agent platforms (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini)
  • Strong scripting and automation ability in Python
  • Hands-on experience with agent development kits and agent platforms (e.g., Claude Agent SDK, Google ADK, LangChain/LangGraph, CrewAI)
  • Git literacy: branching, PR workflows, coordinating cross-repo changes
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar automation platforms
  • Ability to build and operate agentic or automation integrations with project management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Monday)
  • Familiarity with tool-integration protocols for connecting agents to external systems (e.g., MCP, CLI-based tooling)
