Physician (MD/DO) - Independent Medical Examiner (IME), Rochester NY

CLFC Healthcare and Communications

Job description

Position Reference: 01CLFCE006

Position Overview

CLFC is building a panel of New York licensed physicians to perform independent medical evaluations for a public school district employee benefits department serving a workforce of approximately 5,400 employees. The examiner serves as an independent, non-treating evaluator who renders objective medical determinations on fitness for duty, assault leave, and work-relatedness questions.

Each engagement includes review of the provided medical records, the examination or interview, and completion of the written IME determination report. Report preparation time is compensated. This is a conflict-free role: the examiner does not treat district employees and holds no treating relationship with any examinee. Engagements are scheduled as needed, with CLFC Program Management Office support handling coordination, records intake, and report logistics so the physician focuses on the clinical evaluation and the written determination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent medical examinations of district employees on referral from the employee benefits department.
  • Render objective fitness-for-duty determinations and evaluate assault-leave and work-relatedness questions.
  • Review provided medical records and produce timely, clear, and defensible written evaluation reports that address the referral questions directly.
  • Maintain a strict conflict-free, non-treatment posture at all times.
  • Comply with all applicable confidentiality, privacy, and records-handling requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted New York State physician license (MD or DO).
  • Board certification in a relevant specialty (Occupational Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or specialty appropriate to the referral).
  • Demonstrated experience performing independent medical examinations or fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • No treating relationship with district employees and a clean licensure history.
  • Strong medical report-writing skills.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Subspecialty training or concentration in Occupational Medicine.
  • Experience supporting public-sector or employer fitness-for-duty and disability programs.
  • Track record of well-documented, litigation-defensible evaluation reports.

Compensation and Engagement Details

  • Independent contractor (1099) engagement billed hourly at $238 to $288 per hour, including compensated report-preparation time, on a per-evaluation, as-needed basis.
  • Low-volume supplemental panel opportunity averaging approximately 150 compensated hours annually, ideal alongside an existing clinical practice.
  • On-site evaluations at district-designated examination locations in Rochester, New York, scheduled as needed, Eastern Time.
  • Professional liability requirements and coverage coordination are reviewed during onboarding.
  • CLFC Program Management Office provides scheduling, secure records handling, and report coordination.
  • Multi-year program potential as the district evaluation needs recur across the contract term.
