Contract Risk information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Risk professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Risk professional, you need strong knowledge of contract law, risk assessment, and compliance, usually supported by a degree in law, business, or a related field. Familiarity with contract management software, risk analysis tools, and regulatory frameworks is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are vital soft skills. These competencies help ensure that organizations identify, mitigate, and manage contractual risks effectively, protecting their interests and maintaining regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Contract Risk roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Contract Risk roles often encounter challenges such as navigating ambiguous contract language, managing tight deadlines for risk assessments, and ensuring coordination between legal, compliance, and business teams. Addressing these challenges typically involves developing strong communication skills, utilizing risk management tools, and staying updated on regulatory changes. Building collaborative relationships across departments and participating in ongoing training can also help contract risk professionals effectively mitigate risks and add value to their organizations.

What is contract risk?

Contract risk refers to the potential for financial loss, legal exposure, or operational issues arising from the terms, execution, or management of contracts between parties. This can include risks such as non-performance, ambiguous clauses, regulatory non-compliance, and disputes over contract obligations. Identifying and managing contract risk is essential for organizations to safeguard their interests and ensure smooth business operations. Contract risk professionals assess agreements for potential pitfalls and develop strategies to minimize or mitigate these risks.

Job description

Building the people that build the world.

With platforms in HVAC and Detection and Measurement, SPX Technologies builds innovative solutions that enable a safer, more efficient, sustainable world.  Through our RiSE talent development framework, we Reach, Identify, Strengthen, and Engage our employees to support them in their continued development.  We're a global company of problem solvers, collaborators, and innovators, and our businesses build solutions that impact the world.

As part of HVAC Cooling, SPX Cooling Technologies is a leader in high quality industrial HVAC equipment used to cool large facilities like hospitals, data centers, and power plants.   With cooling towers, fans, and refrigeration units, companies rely on brands like Marley, Recold, and SGS to provide comfort and mission critical and industrial cooling solutions.

How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

The Contracts Manager - FEP is a critical role within the Cooling Platform, responsible for leading commercial contract review, risk assessment, and negotiation support across Field Erected Products (FEP) and select Data Center Cooling opportunities. This position serves as the primary first-pass reviewer for customer contracts, ensuring alignment with SPX standards, protection of margin, and effective management of commercial risk.

Partnering closely with Sales, Proposal Management, Project Management, Engineering, Procurement, and Legal, this role enables faster contract turnaround, strengthens commercial discipline, and supports scalable growth in complex, project-based environments.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

  • Serve as the primary business reviewer of commercial contract terms for FEP opportunities, and potentially for Data Center Cooling opportunities.
  • Review RFQs, POs, MSAs, and customer terms and conditions; identify commercial, technical, schedule, and legal risks.
  • Perform redlines, propose alternative clause language, and prepare negotiation positions for internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure contract alignment with SPX standards, policies, and risk tolerances, escalating appropriately to Legal for nonstandard or highrisk issues.
  • Develop and maintain a structured riskflagging process, supporting business leaders in evaluating contract risk versus opportunity.
  • Support Sales, Proposal Managers, and leadership in negotiation strategies to protect SPX's commercial and financial position.
  • Lead risk management efforts across the business, proactively mitigating risks inherent in construction-driven, field-erected projects

The role will be measured on:

  • Contract review turnaround time
  • Quality and consistency of risk identification and mitigation
  • Reduction in Legal escalations for first-pass reviews
  • Support of bookings conversion and proposal cycle time
  • Contribution to margin protection and risk-adjusted deal quality

  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, scope documents, and project requirements
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities in a fast-paced, project-based environment

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Experience in HVAC, construction, industrial equipment, EPC, or similar project-based industries
  • Experience supporting large capital projects or field-erected solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to assess commercial risk and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Experience developing contract templates, clause libraries, or standardized workflows
  • Familiarity with tools or technologies that support contract review efficiency

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Construction Management, Finance, or related field required
  • Professional certifications in contract management (e.g., WorldCC/IACCM, NCMA) are a plus

Travel & Working Environment
