Job description

GFT is seeking a Roadway Inspector to join our Construction Services team in New York, NY. This is a full-time, onsite opportunity to lead roadway related transportation projects, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in the field.

What you'll be challenged to do:
As an Inspector, you will support field operations by visiting construction sites to observe and document contractor performance and verify that work follows contract requirements. You will track project documentation, calculate quantities for monthly payment estimates, and communicate with clients as needed. Your work will help deliver transportation projects that support mobility and infrastructure.
In the capacity, you will be responsible for the following:
  • Perform daily observation of contractor operations for roadway and bridge construction projects.
  • Serve as a field contact for the client and project team.
  • Coordinate with field staff such as inspectors, community liaisons, and office engineers.
  • Review construction schedules, including baseline and updates, with guidance from the client.
  • Complete inspections and support field testing activities.
  • Assist with preparing and reviewing construction change orders.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly project reports.
  • Review payment vouchers, manning reports, payroll certifications, and other labor documentation from the contractor.
  • Record project progress meetings and issue meeting minutes.
  • Support site safety efforts, permit compliance, and coordination with adjacent projects.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with safety and health plans and quality requirements.
  • Work with the contractor to reduce impacts on the public.
  • Log contractor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings, and coordinate responses with designers.
  • Help prepare punch lists with the owner at project closeout.
  • Support the resolution of challenges related to project schedules and budgets.
  • Track project personnel information such as timesheets and leave as needed.
  • Assist with cost-to-complete analyses.
  • Use spreadsheets, databases, and scheduling software to support project management tasks.

What you will bring to our firm:
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's (BS) in Civil Engineering or equivalent
    • Valid NICET II Certification
    • Demonstrated past experience as a Chief Engineer on NYSDOT projects
    • Or qualifying relevant experience
    • Completion of the NICET Equivalency Form (typically used for recently retired NYSDOT Engineer-In-Charge personnel)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation construction inspection
  • Willing to work nights
  • Prior experience with NYSDOT, NYSTA, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, or Metro-North Railroad projects
  • Working knowledge of Project Management Procedures (PMPs) and Project Management Guidelines (PMGs) preferred
  • Valid driver's license
  • OSHA 30-hour safety training certification
