We’re partnering with a major financial technology company to hire a Software Engineer II for a trust & safety engineering team focused on high-risk interactions — protecting customer accounts from account takeover (ATO) and other fraud. The team sits at the center of how the company decides, in real time, whether a customer’s behavior looks risky enough to warrant additional verification.
This isn’t a generic backend-Java opening, and it isn’t a pure rules-writing role either; instead, it splits between the two: translating fraud, risk, and policy requirements into precise, testable decision logic, and building the backend services that run it in production.
What You’ll Do
Author, maintain, and tune fraud rules and policies across real-time fraud-decisioning engines to protect customer accounts from account takeover and other fraud.
Translate requirements from Policy, Risk, and Analytics partners into precise, testable rule logic — tuning thresholds, fraud signals, and link-analysis weights to raise catch precision while reducing friction for legitimate customers.
Design and implement features, API changes, and integrations across the backend services that support the fraud-prevention stack — not just the rules layer.
Use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar) as a core part of your workflow to accelerate rule authoring and service development, always with human review and testing.
Test changes end-to-end before release, including shadow/silent-mode validation and managed production rollouts.
Contribute to engineering quality across the stack: design docs, code reviews, automated tests, CI/CD, and observability.
Support monitoring, on-call, and rapid issue resolution using observability dashboards to track service health, rule performance, and latency.
Collaborate closely with Policy, Analytics, Data Science, and Product partners to respond to emerging fraud attacks.
Required Qualifications
2–3+ years of professional software engineering experience building backend services.
Proficiency in a server-side language, especially Java; Python or Node.js also valuable.
Experience translating business, policy, fraud, risk, or compliance requirements into executable rules or code.
Solid experience with RESTful API design and a server framework such as Spring MVC, Express, or Django.
Experience with relational and/or NoSQL database technologies.
Hands-on experience contributing to a production service — production-quality code and tests, deployment, and on-call.
Proficiency with AI coding tools and the judgment to use them effectively while validating their output.
Solid grasp of Agile development, object-oriented design, and engineering best practices.
