What is a contract paramedic?

Contract paramedics are emergency medical professionals who work on a contractual basis rather than as full-time employees for a single organization. They are often hired by private companies, government agencies, event organizers, or disaster response teams to provide medical care in various settings, such as remote locations, large public events, or during emergencies. Contract paramedics must maintain the same certifications and skills as traditional paramedics, but their work arrangements offer more flexibility and variety in assignments. This role can involve travel and adapting to different environments, and may offer higher pay or unique benefits compared to standard paramedic positions.

What does a contract paramedic do?

A contract paramedic is a licensed professional who usually works in different areas to treat and transport emergency patients. They work a temporary contract job, moving from assignment to assignment. Common duties and responsibilities of a contract paramedic include assessing a patient’s condition, providing life support or first aid care to people with severe illnesses and injuries, and getting patients to the hospital as quickly as possible, particularly after an emergency. Individuals in this position also replace, clean, and take inventory of equipment and supplies, and they document their care of patients.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a contract paramedic?

To thrive as a Contract Paramedic, you need advanced emergency medical knowledge, practical field experience, and current paramedic certification such as NREMT-P or state licensure. Familiarity with ambulance equipment, electronic patient care reporting systems, and potentially specialized certifications like ACLS or PHTLS is typically required. Strong decision-making, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for handling unpredictable and high-pressure situations. These skills and qualifications ensure rapid, effective patient care and maintain safety and compliance in diverse and often challenging environments.

What unique challenges do contract paramedics face compared to permanent staff, and how can they prepare for these?

Contract paramedics often need to quickly adapt to new teams, protocols, and environments, as they may be assigned to different locations or agencies on short notice. This can present challenges in building rapport with colleagues and staying updated on varying procedures. To succeed, contract paramedics should develop strong communication skills, maintain flexibility, and proactively familiarize themselves with local protocols and equipment. Networking with other contract staff and seeking feedback can also help ease transitions and ensure high-quality patient care.

Job Description
Job Location: Iraq
You'll step into a senior paramedic role where clinical judgment, EMS leadership, and hands-on training all matter. In this position, you'll oversee on-site EMS program operations while mentoring EMTs and paramedics, supporting emergency response readiness, and helping maintain consistent clinical standards across the care environment.
You'll provide direct paramedic care, guide EMS personnel in protocol adherence, coordinate continuing education, and support clinical improvement through drills, case reviews, after-action reviews, and competency validation. This role is designed for a paramedic who is ready to combine field credibility with training ownership and day-to-day program leadership.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the on-site EMS program, including coverage planning, readiness activities, records, and operational coordination.
  • Serve as the senior paramedic resource for EMTs and paramedics, providing clinical mentorship, guidance, and protocol oversight.
  • Develop and deliver EMS training, including skills sessions, simulation exercises, continuing education, drills, and competency assessments.
  • Support clinical quality improvement through case reviews, after-action reviews, training-gap identification, and protocol updates.
  • Perform advanced emergency care, including IV access, blood draws, IO access, intubation, medication administration, and 12-lead ECG interpretation.
  • Maintain EMS training records, certification tracking, inventory readiness, patient documentation, and cross-functional support across clinics, emergency room, and inpatient units.

If you're ready to lead from both the stretcher side and the training room, this role gives you meaningful ownership of EMS readiness and clinical performance.
Qualifications
Requirements
  • Current U.S. state Paramedic license with National Registry EMT-P, or current unrestricted licenses.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Advanced trauma course required, such as PHTLS, ITLS, TCCC, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in EMS instruction, field training, or clinical education.
  • Minimum three (3) years of paramedic experience.
  • Certification as a Paramedic from a recognized program.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident with a valid passport.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain MRPT security clearance and ability to meet deployment-related medical and physical requirements.

Preferred
  • Paramedic experience in remote, military, international, or complex operational healthcare environments.
  • Current clearance preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, training, and rapid decision-making skills.
