The Department of Emergency Medicine within the University of Washington's School of Medicine (SoM) has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director within the Michael K. Copass, MD Paramedic Training Program.
The Paramedic Training Program (M1PT) involves a dynamic environment. M1PT is hosted at Harborview Medical Center and by the Seattle Fire Department. The objective of M1PT is to educate and train paramedic students to attain advanced knowledge, experience, and skills to evaluate and effectively treat medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting as mobile intensive care paramedics. Secondarily, it is the role of M1PT to supervise and manage all currently certified King County paramedics as the single EMS Provider Supervisory Organization.
The Associate Director will be a key member of the M1PT Leadership Team and will report directly to the Director of the Program. This position plans, communicates, and implements operational and training initiatives that are aligned with community and program's strategic goals and mission. This position provides expert guidance to paramedic students and staff and leads administrative, operational, credentialing, and educational functions. This position utilizes process improvement and project management tools to implement policies and develop strategic plans to ensure Paramedic Training goals are met. This position maintains professional relationships and leads communication and interactions across all units within the Department and other partners such as the Medical Centers, School of Medicine, University of Washington and regional organizations.
As a leadership position, the Associate Director is expected to exercise independent judgment, solve complex problems, and develop innovative approaches in training paramedic students. The Associate Director position requires an ability to direct and manage multiple priorities, effectively analyze a range of educational situations, and make sound decisions using effective time management skills, good business acumen, and balanced administrative judgement. The Associate Director must have excellent personnel management skills and must have strong organizational ability. The Associate Director must be able to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Program and School of Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership (40%)
o Independently lead the creation of strategic, operational, business plans, and regional needs to achieve the initiatives, objectives, and projects to meet Program needs.
o Navigate complex healthcare and Emergency Medical systems to identify key contacts and stakeholders to provide input relevant to Program projects, processes, and goals.
o Lead program space-related projects to meet training needs. This includes facilitating coordination efforts between M1PT, the School of Medicine, Medical Centers, and regional Fire/EMS agencies. These agencies include but are not limited to Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Jefferson, Kitsap, San Juan, and Island Counties.
o Serve as the primary liaison with King County EMS, participating in regular systemwide meetings and supporting quality improvement, policy implementation, and certification processes for all county paramedics across the five ALS agencies (Seattle Fire, Shoreline Fire, Redmond Fire, Bellevue Fire, and King County Medic One), while overseeing grand rounds, airway training, ACLS/PALS, and implementation of the Ongoing Training and Evaluation Program (OTEP) in partnership with County EMS Chiefs.
o Continuously improve Program operations by identifying process issues, planning and executing solutions, and evaluating outcomes.
Operations, Finance, and Planning Management (40%)
o In collaboration and vision of the M1PT Director and Medical Director, oversee administration, organization, and supervision of the educational program. This includes but is not limited to the following:
- Quality review and improvement of the educational program to include systems that demonstrate program effectiveness
- Orientation of and collaboration with clinical & field internship organizations and preceptors
- Constructive analysis and resolution of concerns and issues that may arise with Program stakeholders
- Coordination of paramedic student progress and promotions in collaboration with leadership from the sponsoring paramedic agency, Department of Medicine, Seattle Fire Department, and the Washington State Department of Health.
- Development and management of the Program budget and finances.
- Attend and lead meetings with regional partners regarding budgets and funding of initial and ongoing training of the region's paramedics. This includes working with King County EMS to design and implement training needs within the $1.7 billion dollar levy and strategic plan.
- Attend and lead monthly meetings with fire and EMS chiefs to design and keep within the budgetary constraints set forth by regional funds and our primary donor, the Medic One Foundation (MOF).
- Regularly report to the MOF regarding the implementation of our strategic plan and budget.
- Maintenance of Program policies and procedures that are consistent with UW policy and practice.
- Partner with the Director to manage an approximate annual budget of $2.2 million with various funding sources including research grants, endowment, accelerated program budget, continuing education budget, and the primary paramedic training program.
- Oversees an approximate $332,000 in supplemental funding from the King County and provides reports back to key stakeholders including the Medic One Foundation, King County EMS, and the region's Fire/EMS Chiefs.
Teaching and Direct Student Support (10%)
o Develop and implement course curriculum, and educational offerings to paramedic students.
o Regularly teach lectures, skills stations, and evaluate paramedic students. students and the region's paramedics.
o Regularly teach courses such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and advanced airway to the regions' Paramedics
Team Management and Supervision (10%)
o Lead team of four administrative staff members, one operations administrator, two program specialists, and one administrative assistant.
o Supervise, and mentor administrative staff by providing guidance, performance feedback, corrective action, training, and professional development opportunities.
Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Minimum Qualifications
o Bachelor's degree with major course work in a health care area, public administration, or a closely related field and EMS training credentials. Additional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
o Five years of experience as a field paramedic, or equivalent (RN, PA-C, ARNP, etc).
Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.
Additional Qualifications
o Paramedic or equivalent (RN, PA-C, ARNP) certification (Washington state and/or National Registry) within the last 5 years
o Knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students.
o Field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care.
o Academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at or above paramedic-level training, including RN, PA-C, ARNP, or equivalent advanced credentials.
Preferred Skills/Training
o Knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and about evidenced-informed clinical practice.
o Fire service-based EMS experience.
o Current certification or registry as Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic by the State of Washington.
o Experience with CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) and CoAEMPS (Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for EMS Professions).
o Curriculum development experience, reflecting a diverse student base. Test writing and evaluation skills.
o Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor certification. Experience in teaching the current National Paramedic curriculum.
o Student counseling skills.
o Public speaking skills.
